Can you turn the tide and setup business models for sustainable electricity production in deserts? In this internship or graduation project you’ll be busy with the development of different business cases to produce sustainable electricity in arid and desert areas.

Witteveen+Bos is an international consultancy and engineering firm offering solutions to complex engineering and social issues. As part of Witteveen+Bos 75th anniversary, 3 unsolicited proposals were initiated with innovative solutions to address environmental challenges of the 21st century.

One of these proposals is “Turning deserts into forests” (see also: bit.ly/turn-the-tide-movie). Together with partners, we want to research alternative methods to produce energy from tidal energy with a proclaimed higher efficiency, hence higher production capacity than current tidal energy projects. The produced electricity can be used for the production of water using seawater desalination. Availability of water in deserts can be very beneficial to increasing biodiversity. This may offer a sustainable, competitive, and socially sound solution to provide future generations with electricity, water and biodiversity.

In order to further investigate the feasibility of the proposal, we would like to further investigate the business case. This entails:

  • Contact with our cost experts to estimate CAPEX and OPEX;
  • Optimize our design with our domain experts for cost of electricity;
  • Setup business model including, for example, Internal Rate of Return, EBITDA, payback period, and Levelized cost of Electricity;
  • Setup of competing business models;
  • Thinking outside the box to make the business case, also in combination and/or comparison with other (renewable) energy solutions.

What we ask

  • A MSc student with a background in energy, environmental technology, business or similar;
  • Experience with business models is a plus;
  • You need to be proactive, able to work in a team and work independently.

What we offer

  • The opportunity to work for a global consultancy and engineering company with an inter-disciplinary working environment;
  • Cooperation with experts from the involved disciplines (cost experts, hydraulic and offshore structures engineering group);
  • Hybrid working from an office (Rotterdam, Utrecht or Amsterdam in consultation) and from home (3 to 5 days at the office);
  • Hands-on experience with actual process installations;
  • Your work will contribute to the possible construction of new sustainable energy production in arid areas to work towards the UN SDG’s;
  • Compensation of travel costs and a reimbursement.
