Internship Research & Development

Full-time

Job Description

Start date: September / October 2021

5 to 6 months, full time

Can be combined with thesis

In this role, you have the opportunity to

come up with a conceptual design for an easily replaceable (e.g. inserts) or adjustable tabletop.

Currently our patient tables are equipped with a non-interchangeable, carbon-fiber tabletop (neuro or cardio version), while from our end-users we are getting more and more requests for an interchangeable tabletop that enables ‘tuning’ the system to the type of application/procedure they wants to perform at a given time. For example: for 3D scans the tabletop should be narrow to allow the gantry to move around it, but this is not beneficial for patient comfort (e.g. obese patients).

You are responsible for

In this internship you can be the front-runner in the conceptual design phase of this new tabletop design, that will enable the user to adapt the patient table in a matter of minutes to the type of application/procedure they want to perform at a given time: narrow vs wide, short vs. long, head clamp or not.

  • Getting the stakeholder requirements clear, incl. usability and safety (end-user, IGT, service)
  • Document the requirements and organize structural review by stakeholders
  • Conceptual design, incl. feasibility analysis (materials, loads, norm compliance)
  • Proof of concept (prototype)

You are a part of

the mechatronic development cluster (MDC) within IGT Systems, which is in charge of the moving parts of the IGT system as well as integration of system hardware components. The IGT-systems department is responsible for the development of interventional tools supporting doctors all over the world during their surgeries. These x-ray systems are used in several different domains of the healthcare in minimal invasive surgery.

To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience

  • Studying toward your Bachelor or Master degree in Mechanical Engineering or related study (materials technology, design, testing)
  • Conceptual thinker to driving proof-of-concept
  • Good communication skills in English and Dutch
  • Team player
  • Self-driven and enthusiastic

In return, we offer you

an interesting internship assignment, with a lot of freedom to define your own approach, performing an entire design cycle and leading to a tangible end-result.

Learning Objectives:

  • Requirements/stakeholder management: balance between usability (easy to handle, robust), safety (secure fixation and fool-proof), cost and performance (minimum sagging, Xray-attenuation)
  • Conceptual design, including medical standards (IEC 60601-1)
