We are looking for a Business Development Manager to join our Business Development, Marketing & Communications team in Amsterdam.

This position will proactively contribute to the development of the business strategy of Clifford Chance in Amsterdam while supporting revenue growth initiatives by advising on business development and marketing planning and implementation in order to deliver successful programmes in relation to the Amsterdam strategic priorities.


The role

The role will involve working with relevant Partners, Associates, Sector/Regional Leaders and BD colleagues across the network to ensure the Firm capitalises on key trends and opportunities across our client base. The BD team works closely with partners to exceed the expectations of our demanding clients (multinationals, financial institutions, governments, etc.) in an often highly confidential, complex and international context where strict deadlines and the highest quality standards apply. 

The key responsibilities of the position are:

  • Support one or two Practice Areas (tbc) and advise the Practice Area leadership on the implementation of their commercial strategy 
  • Client Development Management responsibility for a few selected local or global strategic clients (tbc), including responsibility for: 
  • creating the annual client plan and revenue objectives 
  • managing internal client team calls and communications
  • researching and analysing the client's business to identify new opportunities
  • relationship mapping and the development of new key client relationships
  • preparation of internal and external client financial reporting
  • responsibility for coordinating panel pitches and gathering regular client feedback
  • Ensure "Must Win" pitches – panels and cross-border pitches lead from Amsterdam – are strongly managed and best placed to win
  • Work closely with the partners, marketing and knowledge colleagues to monitor legal, sector and commercial developments of interest in the assigned areas, and assist with identifying opportunities to position and raise the profile of the assigned area groups and partners
  • Managing and reporting information – ensuring matters related to the assigned business area are accurately captured and stored in the most efficient and effective way, in compliance with the Firm policies, systems and tools to allow us to use the data for marketing and business development purposes
  • Leading 1-2 client clusters with a sector focus to identify hot topics to discuss with our clients
  • Leading league table and legal directory submissions (external overviews of our rankings compared to other law firms) to raise our external profile
  • To act as project manager on different BD projects and activities, possibly with a pan-European focus

The team

BD Amsterdam forms part of Clifford Chance's global and rapidly growing BD team (now present in 36 offices in 26 countries and HQ in London).


The Amsterdam team is an international team of BD professionals with diverse backgrounds who put the internal and external clients of our office at the core of everything we do. The team consists of 3 Business Development managers, a Business Development coordinator, 3 Marketing / Communication specialists and 2 Events managers. They report to the Head of Business Development, Marketing & Communications.



We are looking for a candidate who is:

  • Highly motivated, a self-starter, with a commitment to high performance
  • Pragmatic, combined with strong project management and analytical capabilities
  • Exceptionally strong communication skills, both verbal and written, including a high-level of attention to detail with strong editing and proofing abilities in English and preferably also in Dutch
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence a variety of stakeholders, well-developed presentation skills, confident, resilient and focused
  • Able to demonstrate a track record of being pro-active and delivering high quality work both personally and through a team

Key requirements:

  • An academic degree (bachelor or master)
  • Minimum of five years of demonstrated business development or practice management experience in a professional/financial services or law firm
  • In depth experience of strategic business planning, key account planning and managing complex RFPs is key

Key skills that will set you ready for success in the role are:

  • Affinity with business development and commercial processes
  • Excellent communication skills, well-developed influencing and presentation skills
  • Experience in dealing with senior management and key stakeholders
  • Hands-on mentality, prepared to work of hours if necessary
  • Fluency in English is required, Dutch language skills would be a plus
