Project description

Immune cells vastly contribute to the development of cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis. In this project we will study the role of these immune cells in the process of atherosclerosis in models of disease and in human atherosclerotic plaques. Within the division of Biopharmaceutics, we are focusing on ways to modulate the role of the immune cells in atherosclerosis and improve the outcome of disease.

The postdoc will join our young, enthusiastic team at the division of BioTherapeutics and will study the different immune aspects of atherosclerotic lesion development to discover new therapeutic targets and strategies for the treatment of atherosclerosis.

Key responsibilities

Within the division BioTherapeutics of the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research, we are looking for a PostDoc with a background in biopharmaceutical or biomedical research and strong affinity for supporting and guiding MSc and BSc students during their research internships. Key tasks include:

  • Supervision of a substantial number of MSc and BSc students during their research internships;
  • Assistance in scientific writing during master and bachelor internships;
  • Performance of high quality research in the field of immunology.

Selection criteria

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate, who has:

  • A PhD in biopharmaceutical or biomedical research;
  • Experience in the training and supervision of Bachelor and Master internships;
  • Ability to work independently in a multidisciplinary environment;
  • Good to excellent written and oral proficiency in English.

Our organisation

The Faculty of Science is a world-class faculty where staff and students work together in a dynamic international environment. It is a faculty where personal and academic development are top priorities. Our people are committed to expand fundamental knowledge by curiosity and to look beyond the borders of their own discipline; their aim is to benefit science, and to make a contribution to addressing the major societal challenges of the future.

The research carried out at the Faculty of Science is diverse, ranging from artificial intelligence, computer science, mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry and bio-pharmaceutical sciences to biology and environmental sciences. The faculty has grown strongly in recent years and now has more than 2,300 staff and almost 5,000 students. We are located at the heart of Leiden’s Bio Science Park, one of Europe’s biggest science parks, where university and business life come together. For more information, see the website of the Faculty of Science.

Terms and conditions

This position is aimed at temporarily increasing the research capacity of LACDR in order to facilitate the large number of BSc and MSc students. This need will diminish because a numerus fixus has been implemented. Therefore, we offer a full-time, 2.5 year fixed term position. Salary range from € 3.217,- to € 4.402,- gross per month (pay scale 10 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).

Leiden University offers an attractive benefits package with additional holiday (8%) and end-of-year bonuses(8.3 %), training and career development and sabbatical leave. Our individual choices model gives you some freedom to assemble your own set of terms and conditions. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break.

Leiden University is strongly committed to diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from members of underrepresented groups.
