Afstudeerstage - Deep classification of target signatures measured by radar
Delft
Fulltime
In the Netherlands, where 2100 employees are based, we are located in four cities: Huizen, Delft, Eindhoven and Hengelo (HQ). Together with an extensive ecosystem of knowledge partners, customers and suppliers, we work on radars for naval vessels, cyber security solutions, transportation systems, communication equipment for land forces, cryogenic cooling solutions and research & development for radar tech (in collaboration with TU Delft).
Information about the department:
Advanced Development & Studies in Delft is small R&T-department of the Naval organization of Thales Nederland. The department focuses on innovation of sensors, specifically radar, such as using new processing techniques, frontend technology and advanced system concepts. In addition, the department is a center of excellence regarding Integrated Topside Design, where we aim at harmonizing various systems placed on deck of naval vessels, for instance to mitigate their mutual influence. Advanced Development & Studies counts 11 persons.
With ‘deep classification’ we mean applying deep layered neural networks to classify objects based on their signatures measured by radar. These signatures can consist of a series of so called radar cross section (RCS) measurements, or they can be from the slow or fast micro-Doppler response of the target, that either focus on moving parts on the objects, like propellers, or on the entire maneuvering object, respectively. Your assignment is to build a database of (initially) simulated signatures and to apply deep learning on these signatures for the purpose of classification. To control the complexity of the assignment, more or less target classes can be considered, measurement noise can be included as well as polarimetry to enrich the target signatures, etc.
