What will you do as a Structural Engineer BIW?

Lightyear is growing fast and this creates an opportunity within our Structural Group. As Structural Engineer it is your mission to develop highly integrated systems with time, cost and mass constraints. Yet, representing the lightweight design core principles to the fullest developing the most efficient Electric Vehicle (EVs).

In this role you will focus on, but are not limited to:

  • Support the BIW system architect by making rapid and effective recommendations
  • Flexibility in transitioning from conceptual to detailed design
  • Develop the BIW to the required technology readiness level with the means and time available
  • Active involvement in the CAE meetings where the BIW development is key
  • Joining the sessions of all structural domain development related activities


So what does a typical day look like?

To be honest, no one day will be the same and you need to be flexible and work on things you didn’t expect at the beginning of your day. As structural engineer BIW you interact with many different stakeholders but also work on your technical challenges. You will be focused on getting things done right and in time and you deal with the constraint of time and costs. You anticipate the biggest risks like crash development where you deal with a great many input from stakeholders.

Things that you will be working on during a typical day:

  • Support the system architect on BIW challenges
  • Support the integration of battery parts, closures and suspension
  • Start with ESC
  • Do simulations and give input to suppliers
  • Perform research on materials
  • Design on the edge of what’s possible from a weight point of view


What do we expect from a Structural Engineer BIW at Lightyear?

In order to succeed in the dynamic world of Lightyear pro-activity, professionalism, communication and adaptability are crucial. We are looking for someone with an ambitious attitude who learned from the past but who strives to set new standards in the future. You know how to combine the "tried and tested" with an intelligent dose of creativity and thinking outside of the box. Furthermore we are looking for someone with:

  • Master degree in Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering or similar;
  • Minimum 3 years relevant experience;
  • Experienced in recommending and interfacing with multiple stakeholders in a fast-paced multidisciplinary environment
  • Experienced in carrying out classical stress calculations
  • Experienced in analysis & design for crashworthiness
  • Experienced in analysis & design for fatigue and defining the service life of high-performance components
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to develop effective solutions
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively on problems that have not been tackled yet, this in an iterative and collaborative manner. You are able to deliver analysis on difficult projects with tight time constraints
  • You are a strong communicator and able to communicate and report complicated and detailed results in an easy manner to both design engineers and technical management
  • Fluent in English
