Graduate Internship - Thermal management of electrical components using Model Predictive Control
Helmond
Fulltime
Which team will you become part of?
You will be part of the multidisciplinary thermal management system (TMS) team. TMS is one of the most complex systems in an electrical vehicle due to its interaction with crucial components of the vehicle and the goal to ensure safe and efficient operation of the electronics and cabin comfort. In an EV thermal control can have a significant impact on the vehicle range and driver experience, so it is a growing area of significance within the automotive industry. Since the TMS has a strong interaction with the other systems in the vehicle, multidisciplinary collaboration and intensive testing of interaction is important for an efficient overall solution. You will work closely with control, thermal, software and testing engineers within the TMS team to develop your solution for conditioning the temperature of all the electrical components. Besides support from the TMS team, you will get guidance from Lightyear’s Performance & Control domain, which is our group of control engineers that takes care of all control (related) work over the various systems in the Lightyear One.
Your personal mission
Your task will be related to the coolant circuit of the TMS system, designed to keep the temperature of the battery, motors, inverters and the on-board charger within the specified operation limits. The components all have different targets and may require either heating or cooling. Since at Lightyear we are making the most efficient car possible, it is important to achieve the temperature targets with minimal energy consumption over the considered use cases. This, of course, has to be achieved under actuator and safety constraints which poses a challenging control problem.
Within the project you will define an optimization problem for the system at hand taking into account the energy used to condition the components to the right temperature. You will design an MPC controller and compare its theoretical performance to the implemented controller on the Lightyear One for one of the operating modes. Afterwards, you will extend the optimization problem to include multiple operation modes and design an appropriate controller. Of course, all controllers you develop eventually should be tested with hardware in the loop.
Requirements in order to achieve your personal mission
In order to successfully work on this assignment, you should possess a Bachelor degree in Electrical/Mechanical/Thermal/Vehicle Engineering and you’re currently pursuing your Master degree in either these disciplines with specialization in control or in Control Engineering. Furthermore:
What you bring along as a talented intern
At Lightyear we highly value people that have both, soft and hard skills. We’re looking for someone who is:
What do we offer
In addition to a challenging graduate internship you also have the opportunity to work for a company with a real, honest and ambitious mission. In this way you have the opportunity to make a huge impact on the future of mobility! In addition, we also offer:
At Lightyear we are building an electric car that charges itself. From our experience at Solar Team Eindhoven, we know this is only possible starting from scratch. At Lightyear we bring together a multidisciplinary team of highly motivated engineers, designers, and visionaries to challenge the status quo. Write the story with us!
"Lightyear is an exceptional team that puts together people from all over the world with the same goal of creating a meaningful positive impact in our society. I felt welcome from the very first day and working with such motivated engineers gives me the energy I need to do my best every day."
"Lightyear is een geweldig bedrijf om voor te werken. Het voelt voor mij meer als familie dan een werkgever. Klinkt misschien een beetje heftig, maar het is zo. Je maakt makkelijk vrienden op werk: iedereen is vriendelijk, behulpzaam en zo gemotiveerd om echt een verschil te maken in de wereld.”
