This is an exciting opportunity to launch, shape and lead an Open Access journal that supports the Organic Chemistry community and will become the flagship title within our prestigious Tetrahedron family journals portfolio. As Editor-in-Chief you will report to an Executive Publisher within the Chemistry team.

As the Editor-in-Chief of Tetrahedron Chem, our new, Open Access, leading journal for the Organic, Chemistry community, you will assume overall responsibility for setting the scope of Tetrahedron Chem, appointing the board and ensuring the quality and quantity of the research articles published in the journal. Working within Elsevier’s Chemistry department, which is part of the STM journals (STMJ) Physical Sciences group, you will lead the editorial team including the management of internal Scientific editors, as well as an external international and prestigious academic editorial board for Tetrahedron Chem. The Editor-in-Chief will also need to develop and foster partnerships with other editorial teams including the Chem team at Cell Press and the external editorial team of our prestigious Tetrahedron family titles (Tetrahedron, Tetrahedron Letters, Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry, and Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters,). You will be expected to travel to attend conferences, seminars, and scientific meetings and to build on your existing broad network of domestic and international contacts.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • developing the overall scope and editorial direction of the new journal
  • leading a team of scientific Editors
  • building the external academic editorial board
  • commissioning top quality articles within the scope and remit of the journal
  • collaborating on defining production workflows, marketing, social media and website after launch
  • championing Tetrahedron Chem as a flagship journal to the community
  • raising your profile within the organic chemistry community and extending your network to embed yourself as a recognisable name / face within that community

What you’ll be doing:

  • Manage the assessment of all submissions to Tetrahedron Chem with support from Scientific Editors
  • Commission high quality invited content to reach quality and quantity targets
  • Liaise and build a strong working relationship with the Chem team at Cell Press to facilitate article transfers and cross promotion opportunities, serving as the main point of contact between these teams
  • Strong advocacy for Tetrahedron Chem as well as the 4 related Tetrahedron family of titles via conference attendance, network and relationship building, institute visits, giving publishing presentations at universities and conferences and strong interactions with the international research community
  • Build a strong working relationship with the external editors and collaborate closely on implementing journal and brand strategies to develop the portfolio of titles and the conference

The qualified candidate is expected to have:

  • Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry is essential
  • Editorial experience is essential, preferably on a high-profile academic journal
  • Broad interest across the full spectrum of Organic Chemistry
  • Expertise in and knowledge of Open Access publishing
  • Project and/or people management skills
  • Previous management experience is beneficial but not essential
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Interest in engaging with the scientific community
  • The ability to build, nurture and manage extended networks within both academic and publishing communities.
