Job Purpose:

You will use data analytics to drive and implement actionable strategic initiatives across STMJ. This role provides an opportunity to make a significant impact on the strategic thinking across STMJ.

You will be part of a growing and dynamic team that will count on your contribution. You will work collaboratively with colleagues in the STMJ strategy team and business divisions across Elsevier.

Main Accountabilities and Tasks:

  • Lead actionable strategy and initiatives for the STMJ publishing units, by performing and communicating relevant insights from portfolio analysis, competitor analysis, growth opportunity assessments etc
  • Extract data from key Elsevier databases and tools including Scopus, SciVal etc
  • Use data analytical techniques to analyse the data, spot trends and derive insights and recommend actions
  • Communicate your analyses and insights to stakeholders across the business, including preparation of presentations / reports
  • Support and drive implementation of recommendations
  • Build relationships and develop trust across the Elsevier business units, understand their responsibilities, needs and key business challenges
  • Monitor and analyse markets (sector and geography) to stay on top of market trends, competitor dynamics and regulatory developments, and assess / report on our own performance within the markets in which we play

Support STMJ-wide strategic initiatives; these will vary, however past examples include creating technology roadmap to drive research integrity, driving open access strategy for Cell Press and The Lancet journals, developing a strategy for the societies business, identifying and assessing organic and inorganic market opportunities etc

Person Specification

Background and education

  • Work experience in a data analyst / analytical role
  • PhD in a relevant discipline
  • Experience in the publishing space
  • Affinity with the world of research, understanding of author and researcher priorities and needs and how these translate into and use previously published work
  • English speaker (fluent in written and spoken English)

Knowledge, Skills and Experiences

  • Problem solver who has an ability to think creatively, to structure complex problems and draw insights from data
  • Outstanding qualitative and quantitative analytical skills
  • Advanced capabilities in Excel or coding / programming techniques e.g., SQL or other database query language, big data analytics workflows, programming languages including Python, Matlab
  • Experience in data visualization software such as Tableau
  • Experience in developing clear, compelling and visually appealing MS-PowerPoint presentations
  • A collaborative, collegial working style
  • Organised with an ability to plan, establish priorities and deliver on multiple projects at once to achieve results
  • Internally motivated, positive and enthusiastic self-starter who will pro-actively drive projects forward
