Job description

This postdoc position is framed in the new European Project Optidamatol. The project investigates the applicability of the quenching and partitioning (Q&P) process to thick steel components, in which the microstructure developed by the steels is affected by the presence of thermal gradients during processing. The processing of thick components by the QP process would lead to microstructures containing retained austenite in a matrix of tempered martensite. The addition of retained austenite has the potential of leading to improved combinations of strength and toughness with respect to typical quenching and tempering components. You will experimentally and theoretically investigate the microstructure development across thickness in Q&P steels that will be specially designed for these applications. Scientific investigations at the hosting research group have a fundamental nature and an applied focus. This project is funded by the European Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) and the partners are Polytechnic University of Catalunya, TU Delft Sidenor, Idonial, Sidenor (long-product steelmaker) and HIlti (manufacturer of tool parts).

Requirements

Applicants should have a doctoral degree in physics, chemistry or materials science and have a high level of English proficiency.

You must have experience in the field of phase transformations in metals. Also, you should be independent, self-driven, highly enthusiastic and must have curiosity for fundamental aspects of science. Vision and collaborative spirit are essential. Affinity for education tasks will be appreciated.

Conditions of employment

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (salary indication € 3.491 - € 4.402 per month). The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount on health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.

For international applicants we offer the Coming to Delft Service and Partner Career Advice to assist you with your relocation. An International Children's Centre offers childcare and there is an international primary school.

This postdoc position has a fixed-term contract of 3 years.
