Job description

In a joint effort between TU Delft and Leiden University Medical Center, we are looking to fill an exciting Ph.D. position in translational research on quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the heart. The successful candidate will pursue their four year doctorate in a young and dynamic group in a prolific, creative and fun environment.

At TU Delft the candidate will be affiliated with, the Magnetic Resonance Systems lab (Mars lab), a newly founded research lab in the Department of Imaging Physics, working relentlessly on the advancement of quantitative imaging. In LUMC the candidate will work with the Cardiovascular Imaging Group (CVIG), a well established clinical research group in the Department of Radiology.

The Ph.D. student will be responsible for an own research line that aims at development of novel acquisition schemes to detect subtle forms of heart-attack with quantitative MRI. This project will comprise a strong sequence development part supported by the team at TU Delft. The project will be carried out translationally in a close collaboration with the LUMC, with joint supervision by Prof. Hildo Lamb.

The successful candidate will also be involved in other ongoing research projects at the labs. At advanced stages the PhD student will have the opportunity to take mentoring responsibility for students at the bachelor’s and master’s level.

The primary infrastructure for MRI research at the Mars lab is a new Philips Ingenia 3T scanner, located in a local clinical research center. The CVIG has access to various clinical Philips 1.5T and 3T scanners, which will be used in clinical translation of novel techniques.

Requirements

At Mars lab we value drive, curiosity and passion for research more than any previous experience in the field. The following criteria will be used to evaluate potential candidates

  • Masters or equivalent in physics, math, computer science or a related field
  • Highly competitive academic record and outstanding performance at Bachelor’s and Master’s level
  • Good knowledge of written and spoken English
  • Previous programming experience is highly advantageous
  • Some prior knowledge about MRI or medical image processing is desirable but not strictly required

Conditions of employment

TU Delft offers PhD-candidates a 4-year contract, with an official go/no go progress assessment after one year. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2395 per month in the first year to € 3061 in the fourth year. As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School. The TU Delft Graduate School provides an inspiring research environment with an excellent team of supervisors, academic staff and a mentor. The Doctoral Education Programme is aimed at developing your transferable, discipline-related and research skills.

The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, discounts on health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged. For international applicants we offer the Coming to Delft Service and Partner Career Advice to assist you with your relocation.

Faculty Applied Sciences

With more than 1,000 employees, including 135 pioneering principal investigators, as well as a population of about 3,400 passionate students, the Faculty of Applied Sciences is an inspiring scientific ecosystem. Focusing on key enabling technologies, such as quantum- and nanotechnology, photonics, biotechnology, synthetic biology and materials for energy storage and conversion, our faculty aims to provide solutions to important problems of the 21st century. To that end, we train students in broad Bachelor's and specialist Master's programmes with a strong research component. Our scientists conduct ground-breaking fundamental and applied research in the fields of Life and Health Science & Technology, Nanoscience, Chemical Engineering, Radiation Science & Technology, and Engineering Physics. We are also training the next generation of high school teachers and science communicators.

Department Imaging Physics (ImPhys)

Research in the department of Imaging Physics is aimed at developing novel instrumentation and methodology in imaging science and sensing technology. Our research products extend existing boundaries in terms of spatial resolution, temporal resolution and information/data throughput. We are pioneers in developing advanced concepts of computational imaging, a marriage between cleverly designed imaging systems and sophisticated post-processing. In everything we do, there is a core of cutting edge physics and engineering of high-tech instruments, of the use of the most advanced computing techniques, and of a very close link to real-life applications. Our work has clear societal impact in the areas of life sciences, healthcare, and industry.
