Working at Lightyear is a unique experience. You get the opportunity to work for a company with a pure and meaningful mission. A mission that will make a positive and lasting impact on future generations.

What will you do as a Sr. Performance Engineer at Lightyear?

Our objective at Lightyear is to develop the most efficient long-range solar electric vehicle. Imaginably, performance engineering is essential. While becoming part of our domain Performance Engineering, you will make sure that our vehicle is designed to achieve optimal system level performance. For instance, you’ll optimize the performance of metrics such as: battery range, acceleration and solar charging.

In order to optimize our performance throughout the design of Lightyear One we’ve developed a digital twin, our Vehicle Performance Model (clickable)!. This can be considered as a mathematical model which represents the eventual performance and thus real-world systems. By making use of your fundamental knowledge you’ll mathematically describe systems. While analyzing such models, you will find out what is needed to achieve optimal system level performance. This can be either concept choices, dimensioning of components or optimal control.

The scope as described above, will result in the following responsibilities;

  • Develop and maintain models that accurately represent real-world systems
  • Develop and run simulations and present results in a comprehensible manner
  • Plan and coordinate validation and verification as required together with the verification team
  • Execute performance analysis and optimization of systems
  • Quickly identify dependencies between systems or specific parameters, operating conditions or user cases
  • Identify which constraints or requirements are limiting the performance

What do we expect from a Sr. Performance Engineer?

In order to succeed in the dynamic world of Lightyear; pro-activity, professionalism, communication and adaptability are crucial. We are looking for people with an ambitious attitude who learn from the past (tried and tested) and who strive to set new standards when needed. You can work within the team or independently. You are flexible and can work under pressure. Furthermore, we are looking for someone with:

  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Control Systems, Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics or similar
  • At least 5 years of full-time work experience in control, performance engineering, electrical or mechanical engineering
  • Experience within a similar role. You know what it's like to work on model based design and optimize performance as seen from digital twin
  • You understand the basics of electronics, mechanics, control theory and optimization
  • Experience in Matlab/Simulink, Python, C/C++
  • Ability to understand requirements and constraints on hardware performance
  • A critical attitude
  • Be able to see the high level picture among different disciplines like thermal, mechanical and electrical engineering
  • The ability to quickly distinguish the dominant parameters/systems from the less dominant parts

On a personal level you can relate to the following characteristics; you love to work in multidisciplinary teams, you have the ability to think critically and you have a competitive mindset. Furthermore, you’re able to manage and plan projects independently and you’re a strong communicator in English. Being fluent in Dutch is a plus.

What can you expect from Lightyear?

In addition to a challenging role we also offer:

  • A high degree of freedom and independence in your role
  • A role within a multidisciplinary team consisting of highly motivated, inquisitive and talented people with a broad diversity of experience
  • A role at one of the fastest growing technical companies in the Netherlands with tremendous potential
  • 40 vacation days per year
  • An interesting and balanced pension through Zwitserleven that is in line with the mission of Lightyear
  • The ability to participate via shares and to be involved in the growth and success of Lightyear
  • In addition to a dynamic working environment, there is time for relaxation during our already epic Friday afternoon drinks

At Lightyear we are building an electric car that charges itself. From our experience at Solar Team Eindhoven, we know this is only possible starting from scratch. At Lightyear we bring together a multidisciplinary team of highly motivated engineers, designers, and visionaries to challenge the status quo. Write the story with us!
