WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

At the Biomass & Energy Efficiency (BEE) department of TNO, we support society’s move towards a low-carbon future by industrial innovation. Due to the growing demand for de-carbonization technologies, we have several internship projects available in the fields of process intensification for CO2 separation and conversion to sustainable products (e.g. methanol and dimethyl ether). The objective of these projects is to optimize integrated reactive/separation systems and validate their performances compare to state-of-the-art. Depending on your preferences and interests, you will be modelling and simulating the application of these systems to gas mixtures from various sectors, such as steel, chemicals and fuels production. This is achieved by using TNO own modelling tools and experimental data, in combination with literature information. The work scope includes equipment and/or flowsheet modelling, the definition and execution of simulation studies, as well as the interpretation and presentation of simulation results.

WHAT DO WE REQUIRE OF YOU?

We are looking for MSc students in Chemical Engineering, or related disciplines, with the following characteristics:

  • Enthusiasm about research and technology development.
  • Interest in mathematics, chemistry, physics, process intensification and computer simulation of process units.
  • Motivation to run your project autonomously.
  • Knowledge of AspenTech (Aspen Plus, Aspen Custom Modeler), Mathworks (Matlab), and Comsol (Multiphysics) or willingness to learn this.
  • Good command of the English language
  • Availability to work full-time (40 hrs a week) from 6 to 9 months.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT OF YOUR WORK SITUATION?

The BEE department has an excellent track record in process technology development. Unique modelling and experimental tools have been developed over the years, including demonstration installations that can be found all over the world. Within the roadmap ‘Towards a CO2 neutral industry’, we collaborate with a variety of partners, including large enterprises, SMEs, universities and government organizations, to achieve the decarbonization of the industrial sector. We offer a challenging and international working environment in a field that is of eminent importance for our future needs. In your work you will be integral part of a project team and it will include interaction with TNO employees and fellow students, developing both your technical and personal skills. You will be working on real industrial cases, being supervised and coached by experienced TNO staff. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary research team, which includes scientists, engineers, consultants and technicians. You will be located at the ECN.TNO’s site in Petten, in the north-west of Netherlands. A suitable work placement compensation will be provided.

WHAT CAN TNO OFFER YOU?

You want to work on the precursor of your career; a work placement gives you an opportunity to take a good look at your prospective future employer. TNO goes a step further. It’s not just looking that interests us; you and your knowledge are essential to our innovation. That’s why we attach a great deal of value to your personal and professional development. You will, of course, be properly supervised during your work placement and be given the scope for you to get the best out of yourself. Naturally, we provide suitable work placement compensation.

Innovation with purpose: that is what TNO stands for. We develop knowledge not for its own sake, but for practical application. TNO connects people and knowledge to create innovations that boost the competitive strength of industry and the well-being of society in a sustainable way.
