Internal audit - get the career you want at RSM

Our internal audit programme will give you all the skills and support you need to unlock a future that’s packed with opportunities and new experiences. You’ll enjoy a fast-tracked business career that recognises your potential and rewards your ambition. When you join our team, you’ll enjoy a powerful combination of on-the-job learning and structured training – not to mention an impressive client list to work with. You’ll discover a culture that nurtures individuality and an environment where everyone is supported to reach their potential. With us, you’ll always be moving forward.

What does our internal audit team do?

Internal auditing is an independent, objective assurance and consulting activity designed to add value and improve an organisation’s operations. It helps an organisation accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control and governance. A career in internal audit will provide you with the knowledge of how different organisations work from NHS Trusts, educational organisations, charities, housing, financial services, corporates, local and central government and other types of organisations. By having this exposure gives you a great foundation to build your business knowledge. We have a varied client base, for which we have Periodic Internal Plan’s which are delivered on an annual basis. We carry out visits throughout the year and undertake fieldwork which results in documenting controls, testing strategies and our findings. Audit reports are then written to provide the client and Audit Committee with the overall findings and management actions to address any improvement areas we identify. You’ll be advising clients on how they can better manage their strategic, financial and operational risks. Organisations today face a number of risks that can stop them from achieving their goals. Our audit plans are aligned to the clients Risk Registers which ensure that the key systems and control processes across a range of functions including finance, HR and governance are assessed to manage the potential risks and achieve their objectives.

What can you expect?

A career in internal audit is infinitely varied, interesting and rewarding. No client is the same so you’ll be constantly challenged. With our support, you’ll get the chance to grow professionally, with access to structured training and guidance from expert mentors. Most days, you will travel straight from home to your clients, which can be up to 1 hour 30 minutes away, with the option when not working at client sites to work in your nearest RSM office if required. A driving licence and access to a car would be desirable. The preferred qualification for a trainee in Internal Audit is the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors (CIA) qualification. Once completed you will move onto the Chartered Information Systems Auditor (CISA) qualification. We do offer a limited number of vacancies to study for the Association of Chartered Accountants (ACA), dependent on your academic qualifications. These opportunities are limited.

What we look for

Internal auditors spend a lot of time working independently, so we’re on the lookout for enthusiastic self-starters who are quick to learn and always up for a challenge. You’ll be working on a wide variety of projects, so it’s important that you’re adaptable, highly organised and have great attention to detail. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential as you’ll be communicating at all levels, often explaining complex information both in meetings and in written reports. If that sounds like you, we know you’ll enjoy being part of our team.

Please note for those who perform well throughout our assessment process, should your first geographic preference be unavailable, you could potentially be offered a role in another location or facility. This would be discussed with you in this instance.

RSM will only take one application into consideration per intake. We do not accept multiple applications to different vacancies.
