What is needed to accelerate the energy transition of airports?

It is foreseen that aviation will be a major polluting industry in the coming decades. Although currently around 4% of the global emission is caused by aviation, it is expected to grow to approximately 30% in 2050. In the much-needed transition towards sustainable aviation, airports play a crucial role. Sustainable initiatives have already started in form of electrification of light ground service equipment, building solar parks and small-scale production of biokerosene.

However, many more innovative concepts will be introduced in the future. Similar to the energy transition in other parts of society, airports are facing challenges on how to provide the required infrastructure. To help airports take a leading role in the transition towards more sustainable aviation, we’re looking for a graduation student to support us in researching the following question:

“What is needed to accelerate the energy transition of airports?”

In this project, you will be part of ORTEC’s student team in the Sustainability LAB. Together with other (graduate) students, you will work on the same strategic topic, but you will have your own research question and (thesis) subject. Within this LAB you will have the possibility to brainstorm and discuss with colleagues about the topic. Your research will be of direct practical relevance to ORTEC and our customers. Besides that, we have a lot of experience with supervising student projects and know what universities are expecting from a research point of view as well.

Who you are

You are a student in the master’s phase of your course in an area that combines engineering and sustainability. Experience in aviation and/or energy transition developments is a plus.

You are passionate about improving the world with your knowledge on sustainability. You are experienced with programming and mathematics. You’re able to balance independently working on your research and working in a team.
