Want to develop technology to feed the world?

AI is revolutionising agriculture at a fast pace. From farm to fork - every link in the value chain will become data-driven. VanBoven plays an important role in this transition by providing vegetable farmers with the tools needed to develop accurate harvest predictions. This information is crucial to producers, distributors, wholesalers, industry and retailers in order to optimise the value chain and reduce food waste.

VanBoven develops harvest predictions based on high-resolution aerial imagery. Our algorithms identify every single plant on the field and extract physical plant traits using object-based image analysis. By tracking these traits over time we create predictive models for plant growth and time to harvest. That's where you come in.

How you can contribute

We are looking for a Machine Learning engineer with a knack for broccoli, data and computer vision. As VanBoven’s new Machine Learning Engineer you will:

  • Develop both supervised and unsupervised Machine Learning models for image analysis
  • Design and train Deep Learning models to identify specific vegetables
  • Use cloud infrastructure for model training
  • Advice our CTO on what technical strategy and timeline to adopt.

Are you ready to join an ambitious team?

First of all VanBoven officially has the “most fun team in the galaxy”, so you’ve got that going for you. We’re still relatively small (~8FTE), so you will be among the first engineers to become part of our mission. As such you will have a strong say in VanBoven’s technical strategy. You'll be working with our Machine Learning and Data engineers, directly alongside our CTO. Everything you do has direct impact on our daily business: ownership is required, results are guaranteed.

Working at VanBoven is the go-to strategy for a happy life:

  • Make a Difference. Your decisions shape VanBoven and thereby has a positive impact on the way modern-day farmers run their businesses.
  • Get your Hands Dirty. Join us on customer visits to get an actual feel for the farmers’ reality. Discuss his or her needs and get familiar with the scale at which we operate.
  • Expand your Horizon. We believe in learning on the job. Keep pushing the border of your skills by taking the time to read up on the latest developments in AI and data engineering.
  • Be Challenged. In our startup environment you are asked to develop technical solutions within the contextual constraints. We are stepping into uncharted waters here - be prepared for a challenge!
  • Be Part of VanBoven. We reward our first ten team members with stock options, so you will actually own a piece of our company. That’s how much we want you to feel part of the team.

What you'll get

VanBoven is located in The Hague, at walking distance from The Hague HS station, easy to reach by public transport. We offer:

  • Competitive salary
  • Super flexible work hours
  • 28 vacation days
  • Travel allowance
  • High-end laptop
  • Fast-growing responsibility, challenging work and a great team

Our ideal candidate

  • MSc level thinking
  • 2 to 5 years of relevant work experience
  • Experience working with Python (e.g. TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras, OpenCV)
  • Experience using Deep Learning (e.g. YOLO, Mask-RCNN)
  • Experience with Computer Vision (e.g. stereo vision, filtering, stitching)
  • Experience with cloud deployment of models (e.g. Docker, GCP, AWS)
  • Not afraid to show entrepreneurship and take responsibility to get things done
  • Excellent communication skills in English. Dutch is a plus
  • Of course: a fondness of broccoli!

Data Analysis Intern
