Statutory and compliance reporting

  • Responsibility for Preparing and Completing the Statutory Financial Accounts for several legal entities. This includes the mapping of the Group Ledger to Local GAAP for the Statutory Financial Accounts.
  • Scheduling, Planning, Managing and Co-ordinating of Statutory Audits and Engagements with Auditors and Advisors.
  • Responsibility for Preparing and Completing all Statutory Reporting and Regulatory Filings and Annual Returns. This may include being the Country Appointed Representative and Managing Relationships with Local Government and Statutory Organisations.
  • Responsibility for ensuring the Integrity of the Balance Sheet Reconciliations and Balance Sheet Commentaries working with the Shared Service Centre where required.
  • Assist in financial diligence and preparing supporting documentation of the market/countries balance sheet.

Tax compliance and reporting

  • Responsibility for Collating, Preparing, Completing and Submitting the periodic VAT (Sales Tax) Returns and related filings (intrastat, EC sales list, specific local filings) in line with Local Tax Filing Requirements.
  • Coordinating the preparation of local corporate income tax returns (including local regional/ state taxes where relevant), working with local tax advisors and Central Tax Team. Coordinating with finance teams and Treasury to ensure tax payments are made on time.
  • Reporting of tax balances for Group reporting, including quarterly tax forecasts and Group year-end detailed tax reporting.

Employee performance

  • Help create value for the finance organization by designing efficient solutions to drive operational efficiencies, compliance with company policies, and thereby reducing risk of material financial reporting misstatements.
  • Develop, co-ordinate & participate in risk assessments on financial statements, business processes and other risk & compliance topics.
  • Own all external and internal audits and compliance reviews and ensure zero high findings.
  • Part of the team is based in Manila and therefore requires effective communication in a virtual environment.

Continuous improvement

  • Promote continuous improvement and efficiencies in the way in which the team operates.
  • Instill a 'First Time Right' culture and methodology.
  • Continuously seek ways to create greater efficiency in delivering value.

  • Collaborate with Senior Finance Management team, Group Reporting, Group Tax, BDS and GFS to drive improvement.

Internal control

  • Follow internal controls and procedures to comply data integrity and consistency.
  • Documenting and implementing policies and procedures to ensure consistency and conformity across entities.

Relations network (internal / external)

  • Manage stakeholder expectations on Group Statutory Compliance program.
  • Develop excellent relations and maintain regular contact with GFS, BDS, Group Reporting, RelX Group Tax and external advisors.
  • Maintain and grow the Global Compliance internal relations network necessary to ensure expertise and quality of the service.
  • Point of contact for resolving specific in country accounting issues being the local expert and having local knowledge.

Functional and Technical Competencies

  • Financial skills: financial accounting standards, management accounting techniques, internal and external audit standards.
  • Business skills: project management, stakeholder management, cross-functional collaboration.
  • System knowledge: Excel (advanced level), SharePoint, Hyperion, Oracle R12.
  • Change leader and ability to build effective and engaged teams. Capable to work under pressure, independently and follow a hands-on approach.
  • Languages: strong English skills (spoken and written), other languages are a plus (preferably French or Polish)

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experiences (and any other requirements)

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or a related field; CPA or advanced business degree desirable.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years in a financial role required and experience in global finance organization - all-round accountant.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of overall statutory reporting and compliance process.
  • Finance project management experience, or experience in managing multiple reporting obligations with competing deadlines.
  • Well-practiced in achieving results in an international environment, with appreciation of differences in cultural and legal frameworks.
  • Ideally will have some experience in Elsevier/Industry.
