Description

Deep Space exploration Scientist, in the SciSpacE Team, Research and Utilisation Group, Directorate of Human & Robotic Exploration Programmes.

You will support scientific utilisation in future human exploration missions beyond low-Earth orbit, with emphasis on the Gateway, a human-tended platform in the lunar vicinity. Your primary role will be to provide project and study scientist support to ESA’s scientific activities on the Deep Space Gateway. This will be built up in two phases during the 2020s by the International Space Station international partners: ESA, NASA, JAXA, CSA and Roscosmos. In Phase 1, which runs up to around 2025, a minimum configuration is established to support early human access to the lunar surface. Research on the Gateway in this phase will be characterised by rapid development and constrained capabilities. Limited crew time will be available for utilisation but the majority of science data will be gathered when the crew are not present. Phase 2 should see expansion of the Gateway, and with this enhanced capabilities for utilisation. The emphasis for you will be on supporting development and utilisation of payloads for flight in Phase 1, whilst preparing for scientific utilisation of the Gateway in Phase 2.Focus areas for research to be conducted on the Gateway, in particular in Phase 1, include:

  • radiation and its biological effects
  • astrobiology
  • cosmic dust
  • space plasma physics

Duties

Reporting to the SciSpace Team Leader, your primary duties will include:

  • science management of science and research activities associated with ESA payloads and research on the Gateway together with international partners;
  • leading science definition for Gateway payloads and research activities within ESA including preparing and maintaining scientific requirements in coordination with international partners;
  • providing scientific expertise and support to development of ESA elements of the Gateway and associated technology developments and tracking the expected scientific performance;
  • coordinating associated science teams and chairing associated meetings with them, committees and working groups;
  • advising project managers on technical and operational aspects that may affect Gateway ability to meet science objectives;
  • providing scientific input and guidance to execution of mission operations, crewed and uncrewed;
  • representing the interests of the European scientific community, organising activities related to its participation in research on the Gateway;
  • preparing reports for presentation internally/externally, including to the ESA advisory structure;
  • providing support to other ESA studies or projects linked to the science of human and robotic exploration;
  • actively pursuing personal scientific research, participating in research activities;
  • supporting ESA outreach, communication and education activities in planetary and space science and exploration, promoting ESA’s activities and scientific results to a variety of audiences, including the general public.

Technical competencies

  • Understanding of the current state of scientific knowledge at the given destination and an awareness of priorities for future research
  • Experience with experiments and payloads flown on crewed or uncrewed space platforms
  • Experience of the organisation of international scientific projects or campaigns
  • Experience of the management of scientific teams
  • Research/publication record

Behavioural competencies
