Pfizer UK Undergraduate Programme 2020/2021

External Communications Undergraduate

External Communications Team

Corporate Affairs UK

Department Overview

Corporate Affairs supports Pfizer company’s purpose – Breakthroughs that change patients’ lives. We do this by developing national strategic relationships and creating advocates for Pfizer. Our job is to demonstrate the value of our medicines and company, positively influence the policy agenda and enhance our reputation. There are over 30 people in our group and they work across three teams:

  • Healthcare policy and public affairs: responsible for shaping Pfizer’s policy agenda, managing relationships with government, NHS and policy stakeholders and strategically guiding the business.

  • External communications: responsible for how Pfizer UK is perceived by the outside world by developing and telling a compelling brand story and managing relationships with the media.

  • Colleague and Community engagement: responsible for building internal pride among our 2,500 UK colleagues and generating external trust through impactful corporate responsibility programmes.

Although there are three distinct teams, we don’t operate in isolation – we work together to deliver one shared plan.

What can I achieve and what will I be responsible for whilst completing a placement at Pfizer?

You will be given the unique opportunity to gain experience of the specific skills and attributes that make an effective corporate affairs professional, whilst also learning about commercial business in a major international company. Unlike other parts of the business, we work across every area of Pfizer. We therefore appreciate the goals and challenges for every health area we cover as well as the overall big picture for the UK business.

Working within Corporate Affairs you will benefit from developing highly transferable skills that are the foundations for any professional career: navigating complex business challenges with multiple internal and external stakeholders; managing a diverse set of projects and tasks; developing excellent time management and communication skills and learning best-in-class stakeholder management.

We work in a fast paced, dynamic environment and our roles mean we need to take both the external political and healthcare worlds into account as well as the internal company direction and developments. It is a fantastic way to learn how a large company seeks to invest in and get the best out of its people as well as finding out how we navigate the ever-changing political landscape, support the UK’s health agenda and present our company to the outside world.

As the external communications undergraduate your role will be broad, to allow you to develop a wide range of skills and to improve your knowledge of both corporate affairs as a function and the pharmaceutical industry. You will have the opportunity to support and lead on a number of key activities and initiatives – you will learn about communications excellence, be a part of a busy press office, assist with developing and implementing corporate affairs strategies, track and plan for key engagements with external stakeholders and ensure effective sharing of key opportunities and issues with the business.

It will be a unique opportunity to work in a corporate environment with leading professionals in healthcare communications and public affairs.

Other responsibilities will include:

  • Daily media monitoring for coverage and articles of interest
  • Supporting in the development of media materials
  • Providing timely and relevant updates to UK, regional and global colleagues on key activities
  • Managing the corporate affairs stakeholder tracker
  • Support the organisation of Pfizer sponsored events and engagements
  • Monitoring the healthcare policy environment and media reports
  • Assisting with the preparation of presentations
  • Meeting and meeting agenda organisation
  • Support with issues management

What other opportunities and benefits do Pfizer offer?

Opportunity to work across multiple departments and liaise with other countries, running science events at schools and attending career fairs, working across all the Pfizer UK sites, on-the-job and external training, working with external agencies and partners, attending volunteering days.
