Department Overview

Global Materials Management is responsible for all aspect of the material usage lifecycles from procurement of raw materials, through to Clinical trials distribution. Through complex work flows Materials Management create strategies for the supply and demand for approximately a thousand individual part codes, to ensure material is available and fit for purpose on demand from demand planning forecasts. The GMM team works closely with other lines and cross-sharing of data is a key element of day to day operations. The ability to capture, store, retrieve, visualise and analyse data is a growth area for the pharmaceutical industry that continues to present technical and cultural challenges.

What can I achieve and what will I be responsible for whilst completing a placement at Pfizer?

Through working in an advanced Material Management department, you can look forward to developing critical business and technical skills and being a valued team player.

This specific role is designed to help advance the material planning and digital agenda within a Materials Management environment. The actual scope of work will be determined by requirements of the department as dictated by the digital acceleration strategy for 2020/21 but will include some of the following aspects: -

  • Working with colleagues to identify, map and capture new data sets for the Scientific Data Cloud
  • Developing and using computational models and predictive material supply and demand
  • Developing new and novel ways to harvest, mesh, analyse and present data using a variety of available software (e.g. Spotfire, Business Intelligence etc.)
  • Exploring opportunities to bring Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning into a production environment to bring about game changing insights into our core business
  • Assisting in the design and integration of new software platforms into the department
  • Design and development of in-house online content management systems

When can I start?

Placements will start at the beginning of September 2020 and will run for 12 months.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Type of person we are looking for, in relation to ‘Skills’, ‘Knowledge’ and ‘Motivation’:

  • Studying for a degree with focus on data science or a related discipline (e.g. computer science, engineering, physics etc)
  • Strong computational/programmatic skills with demonstrable interest in developing your skills in data mining and modelling (e.g. by final year course selection choices)
  • Good communication skills and able to understand the language of both computing and science professionals
  • Interested to explore the pharmaceutical industry as a career choice
  • Confident to work independently, with good team working abilities
  • Quick to learn, and flexible approach to assigned activities
