In this role, you have the opportunity to

Be responsible for expert consultancy, ad-hoc support and technology development activities. Your expertise in polymer materials will be instrumental for challenges on Philips products and production processes.

You are responsible for

You will join a multi-functional team of experienced materials, finishing/processing and characterization experts with a “can do” mentality. In your job as a Polymer Materials Engineer, you will have an active role in the design and improvement of the future products and manufacturing processes used at Philips. This expertise is extremely important to deliver high quality innovative appliances or functions.

Key responsibilities and capabilities should comprise:

  • Scouting and selection of polymer materials & processing/finishing technologies, which make new designs and functions in Philips appliances possible.
  • Ad-hoc problem solving in the field of expertise and hands-on experience with material characterization and testing.
  • Gather needs and translate them into (project) proposals and execute them.
  • Contribute to long-term competence development in the area of polymer materials & processing.
  • Develop a network in the area of expertise. Willing to cooperate with other (technical) disciplines, external partners and companies.

You are a part of

The Philips Technical Expert Group (TEG) in Drachten, The Netherlands, is a group of highly skilled experts in several competences that are key for the Philips Businesses like Domestic Appliances, Oral Healthcare, Mother & Childcare, Personal Care, Sleep & Respiratory Care and Philips Health Systems (Medical appliances).

The experts closely cooperate in a network with other product developers, industrial designers, consumer marketing managers, external R&D partners and with innovative suppliers. TEG supports the different Philips product categories worldwide in scouting and developing technologies that enable new product functions organized around competences, with two expert groups.

One of these expert groups is the group Chemistry & Polymers. The competences in the group are Applied Chemistry, Chemical Analysis and Materials & Finishing Technologies. The group consists of about 15 colleagues on PhD/MSc/BSc level.

You will be working at our Royal Philips Drachten Tussendiepen location.

To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience

Open-minded Polymer Materials Engineer with below requirements:

  • You have just completed your University Master’s degree in: (polymer) Chemistry, (polymer) Material science or Chemical Engineering.
  • Very good level in relevant chemistry topics like organic and polymer chemistry.
  • Ability to focus on the broader picture, but also willing to work on a detailed level. Sincere interest in broadening own technical knowledge and working with experts from other disciplines.
  • Effective communication skills, team-player attitude in a highly dynamic environment with multiple tasks at own responsibility.
  • Affinity with / interest in polymer processing, (Moldflow) simulations and finishing technologies like coating, printing, in-mold assembly and texturing.
  • Experience with and interests in i.e. Functional materials and integration of User Interface technologies in products (like displays) are appreciated. 
  • Excellent communication in English with colleagues, customers and external partners on a technical level will be of crucial importance.
