Job Description

Role Profile

As part of the team within Naval Ships you will have the opportunity to work on some of the largest engineering projects in the UK. We have teams working on the Royal Navy’s two new Aircraft Carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth, HMS Prince of Wales, which will be the backbone of the UK fleet for decades to come. We also recently delivered the advanced Type 45 Destroyers and our work is already underway on the Type 26 Global Combat Ship. Your time with us as a Naval Architect will be structured to give you the maximum benefit, working on varied projects from concept design and development, conducting feasibility studies, detailed production and beyond to in-service support.

What you will be doing… (Role Duties and Responsibilities)

Naval Architecture is a whole boat engineering discipline. This means as a Naval Architect you’ll not only be involved in the design of the vessels, but also all aspects of manufacture right through to launch, test and commission. In the case of our businesses, you’ll work to ensure that our surface ships and submarines do what they should do. A large part of the work involves computer based design. However, you will also get extensively involved in other activities too - such as computer simulation modelling and physical model tank testing.

Entry Requirements and what we are looking for

To apply, you’ll need to be on course for achieving a 2:2 Bachelor’s degree. Accepted degree: Naval Architecture (preferable M.Eng)

Overview of Business Unit

As an island nation, the UK has a proud history of world-class naval engineering. As part of our UK Maritime Sector, Naval Ships designs, builds and delivers complex warships and combat systems, and you could play a vital role in its future.

Our graduate opportunities span from engineering to project management to operations, and supply chain. You could join us as a naval architect and help shape the future of the fleet for a generation to come or, as a software engineer, programming the systems that sailors will depend on.

We’ve got great projects for you to work on, like the Royal Navy’s new Offshore Patrol Vessels or the Type 26 Global Combat Ship – a highly capable and versatile multi-mission warship designed to support anti-submarine warfare, air defence and general purpose operations anywhere on the world’s oceans.

Our combat systems are in operation in more than 20 countries around the world and this technology is vital in providing crew members with the information and capabilities they need to operate effectively, whether protecting the world’s shipping lanes or providing humanitarian relief.

We’re always looking to the future and we are committed to investing in our people to help them realise their career potential in an exciting and vibrant environment, working with the best talent in the industry.
