Network automation using a modelling language
With 80.000 talents working in 68 countries, we are one of the biggest high-tech employers in the field of safety and security. In the Netherlands, where 2000 employees are based, we are located in four cities: Huizen, Delft, Eindhoven and Hengelo (HQ). Together with an extensive ecosystem of knowledge partners, customers and suppliers, we work on radars for naval vessels, cyber security solutions, transportation systems, communication equipment for land forces, cryogenic cooling solutions, research & development for radar tech (in collaboration with TU Delft).
The software department of the Application Engineering cluster is responsible for the software development in Combat Management and Radar- and Optical sensors for worldwide navies- and defense systems. The work is performed in multi-disciplinary agile teams with specialists in software/system/test engineering and functional design.
About the assignment
As software department the desire is recognized to deliver new features to market faster. For this, more loosely coupled systems and automated deployments are necessary. Applications/systems are getting larger, more complex and especially: more dynamic. Think of the dynamic environment a cloud architecture offers to applications. At this moment the infrastructure, for example network equipment, is configured mostly statically generated based on a proprietary network model.
This research consists of different phases. Initially the defense network domain needs to be investigated to determine requirements for a network model with the constraint that the deployment needs to be automated. This shall be followed by a literature research on available network modelling solutions. In the last phase, a network modelling solution shall be selected and a proof of concept for automated deployment, e.g. with Ansible, shall be realized.
It is possible to do this assignment with two students in parallel. The second student can then take a partly different approach. Start with a research on available automated deployment tools for network equipment. Then build a model for a selected tool that is representative for our defense network domain.
