Description

Do you have a passion to deliver innovative solutions for complex scientific problems?

We are looking for you, an ambitious student (m/f), currently studying for a Master degree, to support our Polyurethanes, Construction Chemicals and Performance Silicones businesses, who is interested in the fundamental study of suspension rheology as a function of particle size distribution, to be located in Terneuzen, The Netherlands.

Dow is offering great career opportunities in a global and international environment.

The team that will welcome you aligns to Core R&D Formulations, Automation, and Materials Science (FAMS). The FAMS team is part of the global corporate research organization and supports the different businesses across Dow. It covers the broad spectrum of innovation from demonstrating early stage ideas to accelerating product commercialization. Combining the best of experimental and modeling capabilities the team tackles research challenges and opportunities in different application areas with proposed solutions guided by the Dow sustainability principles.

Project description: Fundamental study of suspension rheology as a function of particle size distribution

Many materials developed by Dow can at some point (either during production or when used by our customers) be described as suspensions of solid particles in a fluid. These materials generally contain a high volume fraction of particles that have a broad distribution of sizes. Even if the suspending fluid is Newtonian, this can lead to complex rheological behavior influenced by (1) the particle volume fraction, (2) the particle size distribution, and (3) the deformation rate. In this project, you will study the rheology of concentrated suspensions with well-characterized particle size distributions. You are expected to perform experiments, analyze the results, compare them to existing theories, and develop new models that capture the complexities mentioned above. Successful completion of this project can have a major impact on several Dow businesses serving a wide range of markets.

Qualifications

You are currently studying for a Master's Degree or equivalent in Materials Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or Physics.

You have a good working knowledge of English.

An educational background in materials science and rheology is required. The student is expected to have an interest in experimental work as well as theory and modeling.

You can start around July 2020 for a period of 6 months (exact timing to be discussed). You will be remunerated.

This offer is not limited to graduation year students, more junior candidates will also be considered, based on talents and competencies.

Dow’s internships offer you the opportunity to:

  • Work in a multidisciplinary team of scientists and technicians, who create value for Dow businesses and their customers by solving complex technological problems
  • You will gain hands-on experience in rheological measurements and their interpretation as well as development, implementation, and validation of theoretical models
  • Explore Career Opportunities - by working in the field you have chosen, you can receive an inside look at your potential career path
  • Network - meet a variety of people in your chosen profession through your internship, allowing you to form relationships you can build on in the future
  • Find Mentors - certain individuals can help guide you through your internship and expose you to opportunities to which you can aspire
