12 Month Industrial Placement: Product Design & Development Engineering

Location: Shrewsbury

Salary: £17,500, plus share scheme, pension, flexible working and 25 days annual leave (plus bank holiday)

What do we do?

The Shrewsbury facility is part of Caterpillar’s Industrial Power Systems Division and employs over 250 people. The site is responsible for the design, development, manufacture and remanufacture of heavy-duty diesel engine and powertrain products for a variety of specialist applications, from locomotives to main battle tanks. Having a variety of New Product Introduction programmes for military vehicle powertrains, there are exciting opportunities for two 12-month placement students to join the engineering team.

What experiences can we offer you?

Working within one of the engineering project teams you will be contributing to the design and/or development of the critical sub-systems of an engine, transmission or power pack.

You will receive training on the Caterpillar design, development and New Product Introduction processes, and will be supported by experienced engineers throughout the placement. One of the biggest benefits of a placement within the engineering department at Shrewsbury is the breadth of relevant responsibilities and experiences available to you over the 12 months period.

Design

  • Creation of design schemes and detail drawings. Supporting work will include calculations (Inc computational analysis), report writing and taking the lead on design reviews.
  • Supplier and customer collaboration to achieve high quality and cost effective designs.
  • Working closely with the development team throughout the NPI cycle to ensure the robustness of both component and system designs.

Development

  • Definition and execution of test activities related to the development and validation of engine/ drive train products.
  • Analysis of data and preparation of test reports, detailing results, conclusion and recommendation in response to the product requirements.

Qualifications

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for people with good presentation and communication skills as you will be required to interact with colleagues, customers and suppliers. You should also have strong planning and organising skills to enable you to manage multiple priorities and take ownership for the completion of projects against challenging timescales.

Applicants should be studying for a degree in one of the following areas and be on track for a 2:2:

  • General Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Automotive Engineering
  • Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering
  • Motorsport Engineering
  • Mechanical and Electrical Engineering
  • Product Design Engineering

Other relevant engineering degrees will also be considered
