Job Description

As Senior Packaging Engineer you will be the first and only Kite Packaging Engineer in the EU, and you will work autonomously on a daily basis. You will support the design, development, and qualification of packaging materials along with the investigation of packaging/shipping deviations. In this role you will report to the Senior Manager of Packaging Engineering in Santa Monica, CA, with a dotted line to the head of EU Supply Chain in Amsterdam.

Your Responsibilities

Package Development

  • Provide primary packaging engineering support for Kite’s cell therapy operations in the EU
  • Utilize industry best practices to conduct the design, development, qualification, and implementation of packaging and labeling processes and shipping methods for temperature-controlled sterile products
  • Qualify shipping lanes and processes to ensure the safe delivery of life-saving therapies
  • Support the design, qualification, and use of label printing and application equipment
  • Effectively manage packaging related projects
  • Actively collaborate with internal and external partners
  • Write package material specifications and packaging process instructions for new and existing packaging
  • Provide support for lifecycle management of cold chain packaging and labeling components and processes
  • Identify alternate suppliers, as appropriate

Packaging and Labeling Compliance

  • Maintain awareness of all EU government regulations as they pertain to packaging and labeling materials, components, processes, and products
  • Comply with the company change control procedures to ensure that only approved packaging materials and processes are used

Warehouse, Manufacturing Site, and 3PL Packaging Support

  • Provide leadership and direction to the EU supply chain organization for all packaging related issues
  • Provide packaging and shipping expertise to support both internal and external logistics and supply chain partners
  • Work closely with internal partners, Materials Management, Quality, and Manufacturing to provide packaging and labeling solutions
  • Successfully operate in a fast paced and dynamic cross-functional environment

Quality Record Management

  • Investigate complaints/deviations and develop solutions (CAPAs) for issues related to logistics, packaging (materials and design), labeling, and cold chain transport

Your Profile

  • Bachelor’s degree Science in Mechanical, Industrial, or Packaging Engineering and/or a related field
  • At least 5 years of experience in packaging in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Knowledge of applicable EMA Regulatory requirements
  • Knowledge of European Compendia requirements as they pertain to packaging materials, components, processes, and products
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical packaging and cold chain transport
  • Knowledge of statistical methods and software desired
  • Cross functional experience with Supply Chain, Operations, Quality, etc.
  • Exceptional project management skills
  • Highly motivated and detail-oriented with good organizational skills
  • Good interpersonal and strong written/verbal communication skills
  • Pro-active and able to keep a good overview in a structured manner
  • Possess the ability to multitask and work independently or in a team environment with minimum supervision
