EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY
Young Graduate Traineeship Opportunity in the Directorate of Science.
ESA is an equal opportunity employer, committed to achieving diversity within the workforce and creating an inclusive working environment. Applications from women are encouraged.
Post
Young Graduate Trainee for Science Operations (JUICE)
This post is classified F1.
Location
ESAC, Villanueva de la Cañada, Spain
Our team and mission
JUICE is the first large-class mission under ESA's Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme. Planned for launch in 2022 and arrival at Jupiter in 2030, it will spend at least three years making detailed observations of the giant gaseous planet and three of its largest moons: Ganymede, Callisto and Europa.
The JUICE Science Operations Centre (SOC) is in charge of implementing the ESA contribution to the JUICE Science Ground Segment. During the mission development phase, the SOC supports analysis of the mission science performance levels, by interfacing with the JUICE Project and Instrument teams. This support includes development of tools and processes to implement both high-level mission science planning on candidate trajectories and in-depth analysis of specific mission phases, to understand better the feasibility of science operations within operational constraints. The JUICE SOC team is an actor at the crossroads of science and engineering – at this early stage of development, it is focused on analysing the science and science operations needs of the mission and developing system prototypes that can best support all related tasks.
Candidates interested are encouraged to visit the ESA website: www.esa.int/ESA
Field(s) of activity
As a YGT you will be integrated within the SOC team. The main goal of this Traineeship is to explore and adapt the software engineering solutions needed to support the team and the scientists in producing a feasible science operations plan in a highly constrained mission environment, taking into account that most of the constraints cannot be represented through a classic design formulation.
The methods investigated during the Traineeship should also factor in that the SOC work involves data users located in different parts of the world, interacting in real time or offline.
You are expected to work on the following tasks:
For each of these tasks, you will be expected to develop a simple proof-of-concept of the proposed methods.
Technical competencies
Knowledge of relevant technical domains
Relevant experience gained during internships/project work
Breadth of exposure coming from past and/or current research/activities
Knowledge of ESA and its programmes/projects
Behavioural competencies
Self Motivation
Communication
Continuous Learning
Cross-Cultural Sensitivity
Teamwork
Education
You should have just completed, or be in the final year of a university course at Master’s level (or equivalent) in a technical or scientific discipline preferably related to software engineering.
Additional requirements
Knowledge of AI, algorithm and concurrent system is an asset.
The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
You should demonstrate good interpersonal skills and the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team.
During the interview your motivation and overall professional perspective/career goals will also be explored.
The European Space Agency (ESA) is Europe’s gateway to space. Its mission is to shape the development of Europe’s space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world.
