Wat ga je doen?

At KLM we are increasingly becoming a data driven company where a growing number of employees rely on automated tools backed by data for decision making in the day-to-day operations as well as steering and strategic decision making for the long-term. Teams across KLM utilize cutting edge data processing technologies like Hadoop, Spark and Kafka, and techniques like machine learning and operations research to build these tools.

Working with us would mean that you are not only part of a leading international airline, that was elected as favourite employer by highly educated people in 2015, but also that you get to work in an environment that is both challenging and inspiring, with plenty of room for personal development. We find it very important that people enjoy what they do, because that brings the maximum benefit to both the company and the people themselves. Therefore, we motivate people to choose their career paths within our department and of course, as a department, we support them in achieving their goals.

As a Data Engineer you will be part of teams that build these tools and you will help them by building data pipelines, industrializing machine learning and operations research models and replacing legacy data warehousing systems with state-of-the-art data lake solutions. You will work on collecting, storing, processing, and analysing huge sets of data. You will be designing scalable and future-proof systems and working with large sets of structured and unstructured data. Close collaboration with data scientists, operations research experts and other data and software engineers in an agile way is an integral part of your work. You can also look forward to work closely with the business and co-create with gate agents, cabin personnel and other people that work in the operation.

At KLM, we're front-running and you'll work with ambitious, highly-skilled colleagues to make an impact on the aviation industry.

You will also coach your non-engineering team mates in the intricacies and best practices of data and software engineering, CI/CD, API design, and more.

Where do you land?

We are the business intelligence department within KLM. We are a team of experts who provide business intelligence solutions to different departments within KLM. We don't only specialize in traditional BI, but also take pride in calling ourselves one of the pioneering departments within KLM to work in big data technologies.

Jouw profiel

We are looking for passionate and talented Software Engineers who (aspire to) specialize in Data Engineering and for curious builders who are biased towards action, communication and are thriving in a fast-paced and international environment. We're looking for Data Engineers from all levels of expertise, from junior to senior. Recently graduated candidates are also encouraged to apply!

We have found that people who match the following requirements are the ones who fit us best (less strictly required in case of junior candidates):

  • Real experience building production applications with Apache Spark;
  • Real experience with Big Data processing, Big Data processing and Big Data storage;
  • Real experience with columnar storage solutions like Apache HBase and/or Apache Cassandra; including knowledge about data modeling for columnar storage;
  • Real experience with Apache Kafka;
  • Experience with integration of data from multiple data sources.

Experience with 2 or more server-side programming languages, e.g. Python, Java, Scala, C++, etc.

  • Solid background in Software Engineering:
  • Experience with building APIs and knowledge of REST API best practices;
  • Knowledge of continuous integration/continuous deployment techniques;
  • Proficient with automated testing;
  • Understanding of common algorithms and data structures.
  • Experience with bringing (data science and/or operations research) models to production and supporting data scientists in industrializing their code;
  • Experience in coaching and knowledge sharing to familiarize teams with data and software engineering best practices;
  • Hands-on development experience, preferably in a Scrum/Agile setting;
  • Great communication skills, written and spoken (English) and team spirit;
  • Minimum of 1-3 year of experience building production-grade data processing systems as a Data Engineer.
  • Preferably Bachelor degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering or other relevant fields (less important in light of work experience)

Nice to have:

  • Experience with databases and SQL;
  • Experience with Spark Streaming;
  • Experience with Scala;
  • Affinity with Machine Learning and/or Operations Research concepts.

Wat bieden wij?

  • A professional, friendly environment with a lot of interaction, where much is learned from each other;

staan.
