With our Data graduate programme, you’ll be embarking on a career that offers the opportunity to develop skills in exciting fields such as data science, data engineering and machine learning engineering, which are at the very heart of how we’re changing as a bank.

You’ll become part of the evolving science behind excellent customer service.

About the business area

RBS has a huge asset in its data. How we harness this to understand the world, our business and our customers’ needs is crucial to our success.

We promote the intelligent use of data and make sure it’s used in the right way - our mission is to make sure we support the bank’s decisions and solutions with the highest quality data and analysis.

In our new Data Science and Innovation Labs, we’re constantly finding creative ways to use data to solve our customers’ challenges through machine learning and data powered solutions.

Data Science involves the application of statistics, computer science and problem solving skills together with strong research methods to test, learn and optimise machine learning powered decisions to help customers.

Good data engineering helps us to get to grips with the data we have, and to profile and understand the key features we can use to power our data science models. It also helps to connect customers to the solutions we develop in the most efficient way.

About the Programme

Our aim in this two year programme is to equip you with the skills and experiences you’ll need to become a leading data expert.

The programme specifically focusses on helping the business put data at the core of its decision making, and ensuring the business is able to make well informed, data driven decisions. You’ll learn how we’re using data to drive changes and improvements in customer experiences.

We’ll reward you with a starting salary of £31,850 a year.

During the programme you can look forward to:

  • Learning the technical skills needed to succeed as an analyst
  • Learning how our Data Academy can enable you to develop a strong foundation in critical data skills, and provide the opportunity to master specialisms like data science and data engineering
  • Interrogating, interpreting and visualising large volumes of data
  • Learning how to articulate complex situations and technical work to non technical stakeholders
  • Driving the use of data to ensure better customer engagement
  • Building your confidence, and developing your influencing and stakeholder management skills

The programme begins with an in-depth induction, where you’ll get to know fellow graduates and learn about our customers and how our bank works on a holistic level.

You’ll then take part in several placement rotations with different Data teams across the bank. Wherever you’re placed, variety will be key. You’ll be provided with a breadth of experience and knowledge to give you the best possible start to your career.

From day one, you’ll have a wide network of dedicated people to support you, including a Graduate Coach, Buddy, and Placement Manager. They’ll be there, every step of the way, to answer questions, help you build your professional network and support you in your career development.

On completing the programme you’ll be well positioned for a career in data. Depending on your talents and preferences, you could move into a role as a Data Scientist, Data Engineer, or Data Analyst, to cite just a few examples.

About You

To be eligible for this programme you’ll need to be on course for, or already have achieved, a 2:1 in your degree.

We’re looking for curious and inquisitive people, with a real passion for data and technology and the drive to explore how it can be used to make a positive difference for our customers.

You’ll also need:

  • A strong customer focus
  • Problem solving skills, with a willingness to learn and quickly adapt to change
  • An innovative and creative mind set
  • An analytical approach and an appreciation of analysis techniques
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build great working relationships.
