About the business area

In Risk, our role is to make sure we’re doing the right thing as an organisation, for our people and our customers. Risk management allows for a balance between taking risks and reducing them.

It’s our responsibility to manage risk and conduct across the bank, ensuring we have the right culture, strategy and rules in place. We also manage interactions with key regulators, providing trusted advice and challenge to the colleagues who serve our customers.

About the programme

This two year programme’s designed to equip you with the skills and experiences you’ll need to become a leading risk professional. As a graduate trainee you’ll learn how risk is managed in a large organisation, and gain hands on experience in a wide range of areas, from credit risk and stress testing to operational risk and compliance.

We’ll reward you with a starting salary of £31,850 a year

Over the two years you can look forward to:

  • Helping us to shape the policies around how much risk we wish to take right across the bank
  • Building your understanding of how to identify, analyse and report on risk
  • Delving into the world of credit risk and financial modelling
  • Supporting on change and innovation projects
  • Building excellent business partnering and stakeholder management skills
  • Developing the confidence and influencing skills to raise ideas and challenge the status quo
  • Working towards a professional qualification, such as FRM, CFA, Chartered Banker or ICA

The programme begins with an in-depth induction where you’ll get to know fellow graduates, and learn about our customers and how our bank works as a whole.

You’ll then go through rotations with different teams in Risk. Through these rotations you’ll have the chance to explore a wide range of the work we do. You’ll also build a breadth of experience and knowledge to give you the best possible start to your career.

From day one, you’ll have a wide network of dedicated people to support you, including a Graduate Coach, Buddy, and Placement Manager. They’ll be there, every step of the way, to answer questions, help you build your professional network and support you in your career development.

On completing the programme you’ll be well positioned to take on a permanent role with us. Depending on your talents and preferences, you could move towards a role as a holistic Risk Partner spanning all of the risk disciplines, or a more specialist avenue such as Conduct Advisor, Operational Risk Manager, or Credit Risk Analyst, to cite just a few examples.

About You

If you’re interested in the world of finance, enjoy thinking strategically, and have strong analytic skills this would be an excellent programme to choose.

You’ll need to be on course for, or already have achieved, a 2:1 in your degree. We’re a varied function, and you don’t need to be studying a particular subject to succeed here. But we’ll be looking out for people who can demonstrate:

  • An inquisitive and independent mind set, with the desire to bring new ideas forward
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • The ability to build great working relationships and be prepared to challenge traditional ways of doing things
  • A meticulous eye for detail and a good sense of judgement
  • The ability to learn quickly and adapt to new challenges

At Royal Bank of Scotland we’re committed to helping Scottish businesses grow.
