MAIN JOB PURPOSE

Within Finance the Grants & Subsidies (G&S) team acts as an intermediary/match maker between Unilever and the outside world (governments, academia, NGO’s, companies). The team supports Unilever Researh & Development in creating leverage via external funding schemes/programs (either financial (grants/tax incentives) or non-financial.

With the increase in the number of larger/strategic external collaborations, the globalization of R&D activities and the fierce competition both at business level and for accessing external funding (either directly or indirectly) there is a further need to focus on the stages Strategy&Analysis until Submission of the G&S process.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. Strategy & Analysis + Agenda Alignment

  • Identify internal and external leverage opportunities based on the Unilever R&D priorities for each division
  • Participate in external working groups for effectiveness/impact assessments of external funding schemes
  • Support internal stakeholders operating externally with regard to Unilever’s position on G&S in general and/or for specific schemes/programs
  • Ensure alignment with the R&D strategy
  • Contribute to strategically filling the G&S funnel
  • Support eco-system building teams
  • Support Finance Business Partners and the Finance Controller in developing a method for measuring ROI on R&D

2. Identify funding options & feasibility:

  • Periodically discuss the R&D portfolio with stakeholders to identify potentially interesting funding schemes
  • Actively share funding opportunities within the R&D community
  • Support feasibility/pay-off assessment for “go/no-go” decisions (submission)

3. Submission

  • WBSO, TKI, H2020 etc: interview scientists/content discussions and challenge the eligibility, co-write the project description having the legal context of the scheme in mind/co shape a project that is aligned with both the Unilever strategy and the strategy of grant body.
  • Review budget
  • Make value for money assessments, impact assessments

4. Governance:

  • Advise project leaders on administrative conditions of the different schemes
  • Pro-actively maintain and share knowledge on changes in legislation and the potential impacts for Unilever
  • Lead reporting process with external service providers and monitor costs related to outsourcing
  • Actively build an external community of practice on G&S governance (free knowledge sharing)
  • Identify options for simplification/automation, assess feasibility and propose follow up actions

KEY INTERACTIONS

The Internal Consultant - G&S role will interface with the following stakeholders:

Internally: Finance Business Partners, Finance Controller, Project Leaders and R&D directors for all divisions, Patents/legal team, Tax team, External Affairs.

Externally: Counterparts outside Unilever (eg Wageningen University, companies, consultants, communities of practice), Grant bodies, External auditors, Project leaders from external partners.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Understanding of Finance/Business Administration/Politics/Legal/R&D
  • In depth knowledge of the modus operandi of governments/donor organizations and good understanding of government strategies and policies
  • Track record in independently (co)writing and submitting G&S applications
  • Track record in project management (multidisciplinary)
  • Ability to explore/understand “new” schemes in “new” countries
  • Understanding of administrative processes wrt grants reporting and audits.
  • Understanding of the way of working of G&S consultants
  • Fluent in English (writing and speaking)
