Role Profile

BAE Systems Air Sector operates across the globe, in multiple markets to support customers wherever, whenever and whatever their challenges may be. We operate in multiple markets to support our customers – from design, development and production, through to provision of aircraft, training, support and maintenance. To achieve this, we collaborate with partners large and small, from within and beyond the defence sector, and from the UK and around the world.

The role of Undergraduate Aerospace Engineer covers multiple different Engineering disciplines, such as Aerodynamics, Electromagnetics, Structures, Integration, Airworthiness, Support, Mission Systems, Information Systems, Test Engineering and Flight Systems.

This placement will provide the perfect package of experience for a passionate undergraduate looking to gain valuable skills and an insight into a worldwide defence organisation.

What you will be doing

During their 57-week undergraduate placement, the Undergraduate Aerospace Engineer will undertake 3 shorter placements (possibly at different sites) to gain a thorough understanding of the various engineering disciplines within the entire Engineering Lifecycle.

More specifically, opportunities in Structures may include Structural Integration, Stress Analysis, Fatigue & Fracture and Dynamics; and within Flight Systems, possible placements can be within Avionic systems, Armaments and Ground Support & Test Systems.

Throughout their industrial placement, the individual will communicate with and work alongside subject matter experts on a daily basis to broaden their understanding of engineering in the aerospace defence industry. This is a fantastic learning opportunity allowing the individual to “home in” on a specific engineering discipline and build a strong understanding of this subject before continuing their respective degree at University.

As a keen, aspiring engineer, the undergraduate will have plenty of opportunities to take part in engineering extracurricular activities (or “stretch assignments”) throughout their placement at BAE Systems. One of which is Engineering Taster Weeks, where the individual (along with other undergraduates) will organise an aerospace engineering project for young aspiring engineers to complete during their taster week at BAE Systems.

Other previous stretch assignments could include partnering with UK Sport to investigate methods of measuring athletes` physical and mental workloads, or promoting BAE Systems at Women in Engineering events across the UK.

Additionally, the undergraduate will have the opportunity to organise and undertake tours of the on-site engineering facilities required to simulate, test and model complex systems on board fighter aircraft. Undergraduates have previously undertaken tours in the Virtual Reality Training Facility, Eurofighter Typhoon Assembly and Electromagnetic Warfare Testing Facility.

There are also plenty of opportunities to participate in and organise a multitude of sport and social activities outside of the workplace.

What we are looking for

To apply, you`ll need to be on course for achieving a 2:2 Bachelor’s degree in any STEM subject. The following skills will also be an advantage:

  • Problem solving skills.
  • Passion and enthusiasm to develop as an individual and a professional.
  • Effective communication skills, and the ability to work well in a diverse team, possibly at different sites.
  • An ability to network and form effective relationships with customers, both internal and external.
  • A willingness to learn and gain increased understanding of the business and its customers.
