WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

Empirical data on how the violent radicalization path evolves is necessarily biased, as ‘successful’ terrorist/offenders are usually not prone to be interviewed. Also, existing studies in this area are mostly descriptive of nature. On the other hand, recent insights from psychology show that there are different routes toward extremism, with each a unique set of psychological characteristics and criminal characteristics. Therefore it is important to try to gather empirical data in a more systematic manner in order to create a repository of different paths to violent radicalization.

This project aims at exploring the potential of using natural language process approaches on case studies of radicalisation and other paths to violence to extract empirical data.

WHAT DO WE REQUIRE OF YOU?

You are a (University-level) post-graduate (MSc) student with a background in: preferably artificial intelligence, computer science or data science, or alternatively econometrics, operations research, or another relevant post-graduate programme. You have affinity with data science and programming experience with, for example, python.

The duration of the internship is expected to be 6 months.

Your work will be carried out in our Military Operations (MO) department, which consists of approximately 60 enthusiastic academic professionals with diverse background, such as mathematics, econometrics and aerospace engineering, to public administration and history. We share a passion for applied research in het Defence and Security domain, which we mostly perform in multi-disciplinary teams.
