You're flexible and don’t mind travelling to attend training opportunities at various locations to develop your personal skill set.

How long is the scheme?

Two years on the programme itself with a further year of monitored support.

  • Glasgow
  • Leeds
  • London
  • Manchester
  • Milton Keynes
  • Peterborough
  • Reading
  • York

What you’ll be doing

In four rotational placements, you’ll gain vast experience of the railway through one of the largest asset bases in Britain. You’ll make a key contribution to some of our major engineering projects, such as the Great Western Programme, the Northern Powerhouse or the Digital Railway. You might get experience of maintaining a variety of bridges and structures, or be responsible for specifying innovative building materials and techniques to improve reliability and sustainability. You could deliver management solutions for complicated inner-city assets, or establish inspection and maintenance requirements for embankments and cuttings running through the countryside.

Entry requirements

Minimum of a 2:2 in an Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) accredited degree.

What professional qualifications could you gain?

Significant evidence towards incorporated (IEng) or chartered (CEng) engineer status, accredited by the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC).

What opportunities are available at the end of the scheme?

Previous graduates have gone on to roles such as assistant project engineer, asset protection engineer or assistant design engineer. There are also plenty of opportunities for promotion to senior management positions across the organisation.

Training and development opportunities on scheme:

Each placement and training opportunity provides the opportunity to discharge objectives towards either IENG or CENG.

The focus of the scheme is to provide a platform of knowledge to build upon in future positions to enable efficient application at either Chartered Engineer (CENG) or Incorporated (IENG).

Training and development opportunities:

  • We will run 4 modules of technical training, the first is a systems approach with an overview of engineering disciplines at Network Rail, the remainder are discipline specific dependant on the discipline you select.
  • You will also receive a number of leadership modules developing the softer skills required to start to establish a successful leadership brand.
  • 4 workplace experiential learning placements. The main objective of this combination is to develop professionally registered engineers at IENG and CENG.
  • In the first 4 weeks of your employment we will help you to register with either the IET, IMechE or ICE, the cost of this can be reclaimed via the Network Rail expenses policy.
  • One of your core objectives each year will be submitting your quarterly reports to the Institutions (IET, IMechE and ICE) in a timely manner, this will be monitored on an individual basis. Successful submission of quarterly and annual reports will usually lead to IENG in 3 to 4 years and CENG IN 5-6 years.

What opportunities are available at the end of the scheme?

Previous graduates have gone on to achieve internal promotion and become assistant project engineers, assistant design engineers, assistant asset engineers or rail fleet support engineers. There are also plenty of opportunities for promotion to senior management positions across the organisation.
