Department:

The global Ruminant R&D department is seeking for innovative and interdisciplinary talents that focus on the development of new vaccines against viruses, bacteria or parasites. In addition, part of our task is to keep improving our current products in order to fit with the customer needs. Our research sites are spread worldwide, and more specifically we are now offering an internship position in our research facility in Boxmeer, The Netherlands.

Project and specific activities that the student will be working on:

The goal of the internship is to contribute to the development of in-vitro infection systems to support development of vaccines against intestinal pathogens, more specifically rotavirus, coronavirus or cryptosporidium parvum. Main tasks will be to investigate different published or commercial in-vitro culturing methods/systems with a focus on cell line selection and cell differentiation. The most promising system/method will be selected and compared with existing in-house methods used to study the infection of various pathogens and to assess efficacy of vaccine candidates. Additional goal will be to generate a cell system enabling us to study infection of field isolates that are hard or not able to grow in our current systems.

The project will be run in collaboration with our Discovery & Technology department as well as Swine R&D.

The student will work on:

  • Literature review on published methods for in-vitro infection systems
  • Compare found methods with methods currently used within our company
  • Test the different methods with different cell types.
  • Find and implement leads to improve the current infection systems

Using techniques:

  • In-vitro propagation of cells in different systems
  • PCR
  • Infection of parasites and or viruses
  • ELISA
  • (Fluorescence) Microscope

The activities described above are the basic package and will be conducted often independently after a good first work- and learning period. On its own initiative or by request from the organization, these can be supplemented with other projects and / or tasks.

We are looking for:

A still studying Bachelor of Science student Life Sciences (HLO) or equivalent who;

  • Is available for 5 days a week for a period of 6 to 9 months.
  • Has a professional attitude, enthusiasm and inquisitiveness entails and finds it a challenge to do an internship in a dynamic complex environment.
  • Has good communication skills.
  • Can work independently but also in a team.
  • Wants to make a difference in animal health care

We offer:
