Functie

The Department of Physics at Utrecht University is actively seeking qualified candidates for a full-time Full Professor position in Experimental Biophysics & Bio-Inspired Materials. This position is the senior of a pair of positions created with funds from the Dutch Sectorplan Physics, which together will strengthen the Department’s focus on bio-inspired materials and devices. This position will be embedded within the Debye Institute for Nanomaterials Science. Its junior counterpart (Tenure Track position) will be embedded within the Institute for Theoretical Physics. The successful candidate will help strengthen the Institute by developing an independent research line and will benefit from collaborations with groups within the Debye Institute (which has groups in both the departments of Physics and Chemistry), the Institute for Theoretical Physics and with groups in Life Sciences.

Furthermore, the candidate will contribute to teaching (Bio)Physics at Bachelor and Master level. In particular, the candidate will be involved in developing a master track in Biophysics and/or a minor in Biophysics at the Bachelor level. We especially welcome research that has overlap with or is close to the research themes of the Debye Institute for Nanomaterials Science: colloids, nanophotonics and/or catalysis.

The position offered is at the level of Full Professor. Although we are looking to fill this position at a Full Professor level, ambitious researchers who think that they can qualify to this level in the not too distant future are invited to also apply.

The appointee will have full use of an existing microscopy lab, chemical rooms, and level 1 microbiology lab, and take over these facilities upon the retirement of the current Chair of Biophysics. The Biophysics group also comprises one full-time Technician, an Assistant Professor and a filled Tenure Track position.

Profiel

Utrecht University offers a diverse and stimulating scientific environment, and encourages candidates of all genders, nationalities and cultural backgrounds to apply. Appointees are expected to play an active role in all aspects of academic life. Ideally, your eligibility is exemplified by:

• Master and PhD in Physics, Materials Science or Biophysics;

• enthusiasm and experience in teaching and student supervision, preferably with some prior experience in the creation of curricula on the level of courses and programmes;

• readiness for active involvement in performing and developing teaching activities in the departmental Bachelor's and Master's programmes, as well the inter-departmental programmes Molecular and Biophysical Life Sciences;

• outstanding research achievements and experience in leading a research group;

• track record of international publications in leading journals;

• track record in the acquisition of external research funds;

• readiness to supervise PhD projects;

• an active role in (inter-)national activities in scientific and/or societal communities.

Aanbod

This is an appointment of 1.0 FTE for the duration of five years. The position will be subject to a mid-term evaluation after approximately 2.5 years and a final evaluation after four years. If evaluations are positive, the position becomes permanent. The criteria to be met and the details will be mutually agreed upon before the appointment, but must include proven success in research and education. In case of a good performance, an indefinite employment is one of the possibilities.

The minimum gross salary is €5,582 and the maximum gross salary is €9,812,- per month (scale H2/H1 of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities), depending on previous qualifications and experience, for a full-time employment. Besides that, you will receive a holiday allowance of 8 % and a year-end bonus of 8.3 %. Utrecht University also has an appealing package of terms of employment, including the choice for a good balance between work and private (a good arrangement for leave, among other things), possibilities for development and an excellent pension scheme. At Utrecht University, the various disciplines collaborate intensively towards major societal themes. Our focus is on Dynamics of Youth, Institutions for Open Societies, Life Sciences and Sustainability.

The Faculty of Science consists of six Departments: Biology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Information and Computing Sciences, Physics and Astronomy, Chemistry and Mathematics. The Faculty is home to 6,000 students and nearly 1,500 staff and is internationally renowned for the quality of its research. The Faculty's academic programmes reflect developments in today's society.

The Department of Physics has a long history of excellence in Physics research and education. Today, we consist of about forty tenured staff who excel in research on topics such as String Theory, Cosmology, Hard- and Soft- Condensed Matter, Physics, Biophysics, High-Energy Physics, Nanophotonics and Climate Physics. More than one hundred undergraduate students and about seventy graduate students start each year in the broad Bachelor's programme and the three Master's programmes Theoretical Physics, Experimental Physics, and Climate Physics.

We work on a better future. In order to do that, we join forces with academics, students, alumni, social partners, the government and the corporate world. Together, we look for sustainable solutions to the big challenges of today and tomorrow.
