Mechanical engineering is not one area, but many. Over the course of two to four years, you’ll get to experience the breadth of our work. You might be tackling submarine design projects or warship refits. Equally, you might be working on complex marine projects, fleet maintenance or nuclear programmes. The possibilities are incredibly varied.

Babcock is a leading provider of critical, complex engineering services across defence, emergency services and civil nuclear markets in the UK and more widely across the globe.

Our business in Plymouth is a key strategic partner to our customers; the MOD and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the UK Royal Navy goes to sea safely by supporting them in Devonport and around the world, delivering complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes and applying our core strengths of technology and expertise to sustain critical and complex assets to help maintain national security.

To make the most of the opportunities Babcock has to offer, you’ll need to have great technical skills, along with the drive and aspiration to develop your career. Our graduates will have the opportunity to use and apply their knowledge and skills, gained from either engineering or business degrees, to help us deliver our world-class programmes, develop new technologies and offer innovative solutions for our customers.

Your development programme will have a strong focus on undertaking a number of different placements which will be agreed in line with evolving business requirements and provide you with a high level of on-the-job training. You will also be given the fantastic opportunity to network and share your experiences through our modular two-year graduate development programme. Through these experiences you will understand the pivotal role you will play in our future success, how we function as an organisation, the importance of our customers and the wider business environment in which we operate.

OUR LOCATIONS

Depending on your programme your home base could be Devonport Royal Dockyard, Plymouth. However, some of your placements may be at other Marine sector locations. As many of our programmes are available at more than one location you will have the opportunity, at the end of the online application form, to select a second and/or third choice location that you would want your application to be considered for.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

You could work in mechanical design: producing drawings and working with manufacturers, suppliers and subcontractors – right through to manufacture, installation and decommissioning. Equally, you could work on analysis and problem-solving for existing equipment or systems. What’s not in doubt is that there will be plenty of onsite work (e.g. implementing designs, finding solutions to installation issues, liaising with designers and office-based engineers). You’ll also get involved in project management too: engaging with stakeholders, planning delivery and ensuring projects run to budget and programme.

WHAT YOU’LL GET OUT OF IT

You’ll get a proper overview of what we do, which will help you figure out what you love and what you’re good at. We’ll also support you every step of the way on your path to becoming an Incorporated or Chartered Engineer – with a competitive starting salary of £29k - £31k.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

A 2:2 BEng (Hons) degree is vital. And because the programme is accredited by the IMechE, IET, RINA, IChemE and IMarEST, it is desirable that your degree is accredited by one of those institutions too. You’ll also need to satisfy the MOD’s security requirements (and may need to complete a medical assessment).
