Naval architecture comes in one size: big. And big means rewarding. You could be tackling some of the most complex engineering challenges today, from designing advanced fast patrol vessels to getting involved in technical ship science. Over the course of two years, you’ll experience the full breadth and complexity of our work through a number of placements.

Babcock is a leading provider of critical, complex engineering services across defence, emergency services and civil nuclear markets in the UK and more widely across the globe.

Our business in Keynsham is a key strategic partner to our customers; the MOD and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the UK Royal Navy goes to sea safely by sustaining the submarines through life with updates, design and documentation, upgrade and overhauls. We are developing innovative Operations Centres, novel repair techniques, technology insertion programmes, predictive data analytics and visualisation and training aids using games engine technologies. If you are interested in supporting highly complex engineering platforms then Keynsham is the place for you.

To make the most of the opportunities Babcock has to offer, you’ll need to have great technical skills, along with the drive and aspiration to develop your career. Our graduates will have the opportunity to use and apply their knowledge and skills, gained from either engineering or business degrees, to help us deliver our world-class programmes, develop new technologies and offer innovative solutions for our customers.

Your development programme will have a strong focus on undertaking a number of different placements which will be agreed in line with evolving business requirements and provide you with a high level of on-the-job training. You will also be given the fantastic opportunity to network and share your experiences through our modular two-year graduate development programme. Through these experiences you will understand the pivotal role you will play in our future success, how we function as an organisation, the importance of our customers and the wider business environment in which we operate.

OUR LOCATIONS

Your home base will be the Keynsham office in Bristol, but some of your placements may be at other Marine sector locations. As many of our programmes are available at more than one location you will have the opportunity, at the end of the online application form, to select a second and/or third choice location that you would want your application to be considered for.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

The activities in this area are many and varied. You might be helping us design a variety of cutting-edge floating vessels and structures, or investigating the finer points of resistance, propulsion and access. What’s certain is that you’ll work with – and learn from – some of the most respected naval architects in the world.

You’ll learn how to analyse and design various aspects of floating vessels and structures (including hull form, arrangement, stability, structures, resistance, propulsion and access). In the process you’ll make a real contribution to projects too. Previous graduates here have worked on everything from naval ships and submarines to small boats and offshore platforms. They have helped us develop unmanned surface vessel support solutions and even been involved in next generation submarine pre-concept engineering.

WHAT YOU’LL GET OUT OF IT

The broad overview you get will be the basis for your long-term career. It’ll give you the experience and insight you need to find what you love and pursue it. Along the way, you’ll enjoy a competitive starting salary of £29k - £31k and our full support as you work towards becoming an Incorporated or Chartered Engineer.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

The entrance degree level required varies dependent on the business location. A minimum of a 2:2 BEng (Hons) degree that is accredited by RINA/IMarEST is desirable. You’ll also need to satisfy the MOD’s security requirements (and may need to complete a medical assessment).
