Submarines Engineering Graduate Development Programme
£28,500 pa + £2,000 joining bonus

By joining our Submarines Engineering team, you could be developing innovative solutions as part of the design and manufacture of the next generation of Naval Nuclear Propulsion Plants, or supporting the plant through its life, keeping the nation’s nuclear submarine fleet at sea. Whatever you choose, you’ll be part of the team providing propulsion to the United Kingdom’s nuclear deterrent and ensuring the safety of our ultimate customer, the Sailors of the Royal Navy’s Submarine Service.

The programme
Our graduate development programme is designed to give you an immersive, hands-on experience. You’ll be working on live projects, learning from some of the most highly-respected professionals in the nuclear industry, and receiving first-class training and support. You’ll be exposed to the entire engineering lifecycle, problem-solving and designing integrated systems for optimal cost. As you develop, the challenges will increase in complexity and so too will your responsibility.
You’ll get varied experience across the breadth of our Submarines division. While operating primarily out of our main site in Derby, you could also have placements that include supporting the Astute and Dreadnought class build programmes at Barrow-in-Furness; conducting maintenance on the fleet at the Faslane or Devonport dockyards; and learning about the wider industry. From this foundation, you can choose to become a technical specialist, or to broaden your skill base further to become a technical leader.
What you’ll need
You should be creative and agile in your approach with at least a 2:1 bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject – Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Maths, Chemistry or Physics. We’ll also want to see excellent communication skills, plenty of initiative and an inquisitive, resourceful approach. As well as that, because this is a rotational programme, you should be flexible in terms of where you’re based.
Due to the nature of our work within Submarines, we’re unable to employ anyone who doesn’t have the legal right to live and work in the UK and, if you’ve spent more than three months outside of the UK in the last five years (e.g. travelling, working, living), we might not be able to employ you. This role is subject to Full UK Security Check Clearance issued by the United Kingdom Security Vetting.
