About the role:

We are currently recruiting an experienced and motivated Competency Adviser to join our Animal Welfare and Compliance team, here in our Research Support Facility. You will contribute to ensuring the animals within the RSF receive the highest level of care by assessing trained individuals for competence in accordance with the Animal (Scientific) Procedure Act.

In your role as Competency Adviser you will be involved in the coordination of the delivery of experimental work on animals, and support the Wellcome Sanger Institute in fulfilling all obligations under ASPA.

As a flexible employer part time and flexible working applications will be considered equally alongside full time applications.

Please be advised that our facility will be closing from September 2021, phasing out into 2022; this is due to the Institute's scientific strategy. We still need experienced Competency Advisers to ensure the highest level of care of our animals. If you would like more information on this, please contact recruit@sanger.ac.uk

Due to the closure, you will be eligible for a retention payment up to a maximum of £10,000 depending on start date.

Essential Skills

  • Institute of Animal Technology IAT Membership or equivalent experience
  • Detailed knowledge of A(SP)A legislation and relevant sections of the Guidance,
  • Knowledge of husbandry needs of mice and of common experimental procedures,
  • ASRU EU Module 1, 10, 50
  • Experience as trainer/assessor
  • Excellent administrative and record keeping skills
  • Strong organisational skills and flexible approach to, ability to multi-task and work to competing deadlines and changing priorities.
  • Good communication skills, able to engage constructively with a variety of stakeholders across Mouse Operations.

Ideal Skills

  • Familiar with veterinary or medical education principles
  • Accredited assessor for assessment of procedures on animals under ASPA
  • Knowledge of HSE, COSHH regulations
  • Experience working to GLP or AAALAC standards
  • Previous experience in the design and management of learning management systems
  • NACWO certificate

The Wellcome Sanger Institute is a genome research centre set up in 1992 by the Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council in order to further our knowledge of genomes, and in particular to play a substantial role in the sequencing and interpretation of the human genome. This information will underpin research on human biology and disease in this century and beyond.
