As a Graduate Intern at ORTEC you will be part of a unique organization and team!

The aim of this assignment is to create a reliable Machine Learning (ML) algorithm which can improve the behavior and performance of another algorithm. At ORTEC, we are creating a system which can automatically process images of customer invoices for a major Dutch insurance company. Among other things, this means identifying aspects like invoice ID, provided services and total cost present on the image. These images are created by the insurer’s customers, usually through a phone camera, and are of varying quality. Low quality photos result in poor performance of the system. The algorithm we want you to create should be able to perform the following two tasks:

  1. Predict the performance of the invoice processing system, prior to actually processing the photo through the system;
  2. Propose image enhancing settings which maximize the likelihood of the system successfully processing the image.

As part of your project you will have to come up with, and extract, features from the images. These features should have high predictive value for predicting the performance of our system (e.g., contrast, brightness, dimensions, etc.). Next to that, you have to investigate ways to alter and/or enhance the quality of the photo. Toward this goal you will evaluate and tune various ML algorithms and find which are best suited for this task.

One of the attractive aspects of the assignment is that you will be working on a new solution that is currently being implemented. This means that it will allow you to get to work in a real business context, working in close contact with the business. If successful, your algorithm becomes part of the software that will be deployed, significantly improving the user-experience of the insurer’s customers!
