Department Overview

Medical Affairs acts as the bridge between clinical research and the commercial part of the organization. We work alongside colleagues across a number of other departments as part of a cross-functional team supporting medicines that are in late-stage development, through the licensing process, to those that are licensed and marketed. The purpose of Medical Affairs is to create, demonstrate and communicate the clinical value of our medicines whilst maintaining the primacy of patients’ best interests.

We communicate to the medical and scientific communities in an accurate, fair and balanced manner about the benefits and risks of our medicines enabling prescribers and other healthcare decision makers within the NHS to make informed decisions with patients and use our medicines safely and effectively. We champion patients’ interests by ensuring that improving patients’ lives remains the primary focus of everything we do at Pfizer.

What can I achieve and what will I be responsible for whilst completing a placement at Pfizer?

At Pfizer, we seek to deliver breakthroughs that change patients’ lives. We strive to be known as the most patient-centric company and to transform the way in which we engage patients and physicians. Medical Affairs is in a unique position to be able to bring patient insights into the company to ensure patient-centricity in decision making.

In the patient centricity undergraduate role, you will have the opportunity to work across the Internal Medicine and platform function teams to gain an understanding of the current level of focus on patient centricity within Medical Affairs, to highlight best practices that exist and to make recommendations that may help us to achieve our goals around patient centricity. There will also be opportunities for engagement with external stakeholders including patients and patient advocacy groups and organisations, and attendance at relevant conferences to bring more diverse perspectives into your thinking. You may also be able to participate in brand specific projects across Pfizer’s portfolio to ensure that patient-focus is considered and prioritised both in pre-launch preparations and marketed medicines.

You will have the opportunity to shape the approach to achieving these objectives with our support, and to develop critical business skills through your work with a diverse range of Pfizer colleagues and external stakeholders. These skills will include communication, multi-tasking through working on a variety of projects and also leadership by owning aspects of the UK Medical Affairs patient-centricity project. You will also have the opportunity to learn about the pharmaceutical industry in general, the way in which we are regulated and the different types of roles that are accessible and may be of interest in the future.

What other opportunities and benefits does Pfizer offer?

Pfizer is a company that places significant emphasis on employee wellbeing and as an employee you will have access to a variety of opportunities to learn about staying healthy and maintaining energy levels. We also have various volunteering programmes including a STEM programme for school aged children to discuss the role of the pharmaceutical industry and the journey from molecule to medicine. You would have the opportunity to engage with these programmes, which also support your own learning and wellbeing.

The patient centricity undergraduate role would also provide you with the opportunity to develop many skills including the following:

  • Communication and inter-personal skills – through engagement with internal and external stakeholders
  • Organisation and time-management – through working on several projects simulataneously
  • Critical thinking – through assimilating and analysing information
  • Creativity – through working with colleagues to develop solutions and recommendations
  • Leadership – through acting as patient-centricity lead and building expertise in this area that other colleagues and teams can also benefit from
  • Project management – through oversight of a Medical Affairs patient-centricity project and through collaboration with colleagues on brand-related projects
  • Presentation skills – through sharing findings and recommendations with colleagues
