ERM is seeking a talented Chemical Regulatory Consultant to join our team in the UK&I. The ideal candidate will have technical expertise in EU REACH relating to one or more of the Registration, Read Across, Toxicology or Authorisation requirements. A knowledge of other EU product compliance laws such as EU Biocides or RoHS or other regulatory jurisdictions would be an advantage.

This is an excellent career opportunity for a regulatory professional looking to advance their career with a global environmental leader, and make a significant impact in successfully implementing ERM's global strategy. The UK&I based chemical management team is a small team working alongside wider European and Global teams. Our preference is for the role to be based in London, Manchester, Harrogate or Dublin but other locations could be possible. The role will necessitate occasional travel in support of projects throughout the geographical remit of the UK–based team across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, although most frequent travel will be London, Brussels and Helsinki.

Role profile

As a Chemical Regulatory Consultant, you will support a range of regulatory and technical projects. You may be involved in a wide range of areas from helping to prepare commercial proposals to preparing regulatory dossiers. You will provide support to a number of key clients and may be expected to work in a small to large team on different projects at the same time.

Main duties and tasks

  • The preparation of Applications for Authorisation or written commentaries on proposed Restrictions on behalf of private clients.
  • Classification and labelling (CLP/GHS).
  • Knowledge of human or environmental exposure assessment and toxicology within the context of a REACH would be an advantage.
  • Additional responsibilities such as the provision of regulatory advice, client representations at external meetings and participation in external events will also be required.
  • Hierarchical position: The consultant will report to the REACH team lead.

Preferred experience and qualifications

  • A University science degree (chemistry, chemical engineering, bio-chemistry, toxicology, eco-toxicology and/or other related bio-, life- or environmental sciences). A postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject such as (eco-)toxicology would be a distinct advantage
  • Experience of applying and developing this knowledge and management skills within an industrial or regulatory setting – a minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in the chemicals (organics, inorganics, metals) industry or associated field (including in a regulatory context).
  • A proven record of working with multiple stakeholders in projects where the communication and decision making process is crucial, is required.
  • Ability to analyse, understand and research regulatory information, data and issues. A good working knowledge of the REACH and GHS Regulations and processes associated with their implementation is required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. The position will involve extensive consultation with a range of stakeholders, including regulators. ERM reports are written in English, therefore written and verbal fluency in English is a pre-requisite. Fluency in any other EU language would be a distinct advantage.
  • Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and strong research skills, i.e. ability to conduct focused, systematic and effective online searches and ability to document results and literature sources in a clear, scientifically robust and transparent way.

Other requisites

  • ERM’s work often involves the collection, handling and presentation of commercially sensitive information. The ability to handle confidential information in a reliable and professional manner is a requirement.
  • The ability to write coherently and substantiate scientifically-robust and persuasive arguments is a requirement.
