Job Description

Our industrial placements are for a period of six to 12 months, during which, you will have the opportunity to work within one of our sectors.

We have placements still available in the following areas:

Civil or Structural Engineering: Now more than ever, our environment and communities need to be made more resilient in the face of climate change. Working on every facet of development, our civil engineers aim to solve this by offering the opportunity to create better cities, reduce poverty and improve health.

Electrical Engineering: Our electrical engineers work in world class teams to design and deliver sustainable solutions. The Croydon team is focused on Rail and our Edinburgh team is focused on Water Treatment.

Economics: You will be focusing on economic impact assessments, five-case business cases, spatial development and economic planning, infrastructure funding, and transit-oriented development.

Ecology: You’ll also be working closely with the Environment Agency as well as local environment groups. From carrying out site surveys to assessments of ecological systems.

Landscape Architecture: Our landscape and urban design practice create memorable and site-specific landscapes for people and places. A key element in their approach is understanding the environment, its physical attributes and cultural context.

Mechanical Engineering: We have opportunities in our water teams, with specialists that have been involved in projects such as the Thames Tideway scheme in London and the Scottish Water development programme. Water is an essential part of our everyday lives; therefore, our teams are responsible for water pumping solutions, clean and wastewater treatment plants, and pipelines.

Transport Planning: The key to a successful economy is the development of safe and efficient transport networks. This is where our transport planners come in. In today’s world, we face many global challenges such as global warming and a constantly growing population.

Contaminated Land Assessment: The contaminated land team works with developers and industrial clients to identify soil, groundwater and ground gas contamination and the risks associated. This leads on to options appraisal of mitigation or remediation measures, where required, to enable the safe development of land.

Engineering: Our Special Services team are at the forefront of developing advanced structural analysis and dynamics solutions, addressing materials technology requirements, advancing asset life management of a wide range of civil infrastructure, and undertaking specialist studies for a diversity of clients.

Environmental: Within our environmental transport team you will work alongside our environmental consultants in a number of different roles, gaining experience across a variety of disciplines, including environmental impact assessment, environmental management, ecology, acoustics and landscape architecture and GIS.

Geology: The ground is one of the greatest uncertainties in any construction project, whether it’s a major high-speed rail link, tall structure or highway scheme. Our Geotechnical Engineers and Engineering Geologists are at the forefront of overcoming some of the greatest challenges faced by many of the largest construction projects.

Project Management: You’ll be part of a team that controls every aspect of the project life-cycle – from concept and definition to implementation and handover. Our project managers provide consultancy services to our clients throughout the development and construction process.

Quantity Surveying: Our quantity surveyors accurately predict the capital cost of asset investment programmes and projects. Join us and you’ll be working with an innovative team of quantity surveyors, cost management consultants and cost engineers. Our teams work throughout the project’s life cycle.

Candidate Specification

To join us for an industrial trainee placement you must currently be at University or looking for a pre-university placement. Our industrial placements are for a period of six to 12 months, during which, you will have the opportunity to work within one of our sectors.

You’ll be working with graduates, experienced professionals, and other students so a placement with us is the perfect opportunity to learn from a variety of people while understanding our values and culture. It’s also a great chance to get involved with real projects while gaining relevant experience.

We do not have a formal structure for our placements, so you can really make the role your own. The more you get involved and the more questions you ask, the more you will gain from your experience with us.

As well as having one of the specific degrees listed above, we are looking for students with the following characteristics:

  • A methodical approach to problem solving
  • The ability to use your initiative to undertake tasks efficiently and independently.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, which allow you to confidently liaise with clients and team members.
  • Excellent written communication and attention to detail with the ability to demonstrate accurate technical drawings and good report writing.
