Role Profile

Our Mechanical Engineers turn ideas into products. They’re involved in the design, development and testing of complex mechanical avionic systems, including helmet display systems, head up displays, flight control systems and mission systems. In the early stages of a project, they’ll apply scientific principles and technical information to generate concept ideas. After this, they’ll select the most suitable design and turn it into a viable solution working alongside electronics and optical engineers, and with parallel development of test equipment to qualify the product for use in service. Through 3D modelling, engineering calculations and a range of analysis tools, they create a detailed design of the product that factors in considerations such as materials, manufacture, assembly, cost and performance — to name just to name a few.

What you will be doing… (Role Duties and Responsibilities)

"During the 1 year Industrial Placement your academic studies will be supplemented and your Mechanical Engineering competencies developed in the areas related to the complex avionics systems developed in Rochester. This will include design and development work related to mechanical, electronic and optical integration into our products. You will have opportunities to understand the development processes and tools used, the comprehensive testing of our products, as well as appreciating the manufacturing challenges, supplier involvement, project management, cost and quality aspects, and to gain an understanding of the broader issues associated with business at BAE Systems.

Through placement in project engineering teams you will acquire new knowledge, experience and skills beyond those learnt through academic study."

Candidates should have completed at least 2 years of study towards BEng or MEng in Mechanical Engineering, or a related Engineering degree covering Mechanics, Dynamics and Vibration, Structures and Stress, Thermodynamics, and Mechanical Systems.
