Who are Caterpillar? What do we do?

We are the world's leading manufacturer of Construction and Mining Equipment, and one of the world’s most respected Companies and Brands in the World. By following our industrial placement scheme, you will be able to explore various roles and disciplines around the business to help develop your career. Our core values (Integrity, Excellence, Teamwork, Commitment and Sustainability) are key to our success.

The Innovation & Technology Development team offers some of the most exciting engineering roles within the Caterpillar global organisation. Working on the integration of electronic and electrical systems for Caterpillar products provides the opportunity to work with multiple disciplines within the organisation.

What is the role?

The integration of the latest Electronics and Electrical technology helps differentiate Caterpillar products from its competitors by enabling exceptional performance and value to the customer. Our engine systems control air and fuel delivery with millisecond precision to maximise performance and minimise exhaust emissions. Our hybrid systems control engines and either electric, mechanical or hydraulic energy storage systems delivering solutions to meet customer needs. Our integrated machine systems control all aspects of construction machine operation (engine/hybrid/full electric, transmission, hydraulic systems), provide the human-machine interface (operator controls and information displays), and constantly monitor and communicate position, operation, diagnostic and prognostic information to enable machine automation, improved productivity and enhanced serviceability.

What experiences can we offer you?

During your placement you will have the opportunity to work with teams focused on the integration, development, application and validation of electrical and electronic control systems for diesel engine or construction machine products.

You will be an active team member working on real development projects, alongside experienced engineers, gaining exposure to:

· system specifications

· embedded software design and development

· control system modelling and analysis

· component selection and validation

· system level development and validation

· product health analysis or quality issue resolution

You will also collaborate with team members worldwide as part of the global team. Working with experienced technical team leaders and mentors you will receive all the coaching, guidance and support for your work, personal development and professional accreditation.

Our placement students can expect to return to University with further developed technical skills and experience of how University learning is applied to the work place. We also operate a conditional offer process for our top performing placement students, giving you the opportunity to start your career with us on a permanent basis upon graduation.

Qualifications

Who are we looking for?

You will need to be enthusiastic, self-motivated and capable of learning quickly in a fast-paced development environment. We are looking for someone with an interest in applying electronic technology to the control of mechanical or hydraulic systems. Whilst this placement is primarily focused around electronics and electrical systems, it is not essential that you are studying in this discipline (Approximately 40% of the current team come from other engineering disciplines).

You will also require excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact regularly with customers and colleagues within the Caterpillar global team. Travel to customer sites within Europe may be required.

Degree Disciplines Accepted: (you must be on target to achieve a minimum of 2:2)

We are looking for undergraduates studying for an honours degree in Aeronautical, Aerospace, Agricultural, Automotive, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Control Systems, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Maths and Physical Sciences.

How to Apply:

Please only apply for one discipline. You will be given the option of applying for a second discipline during the application process. If you apply for multiple disciplines you will not be considered for all applications.
