Faculty Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering

The 3mE Faculty trains committed engineering students, PhD candidates and post-doctoral researchers in groundbreaking scientific research in the fields of mechanical, maritime and materials engineering. 3mE is the epitome of a dynamic, innovative faculty, with a European scope that contributes demonstrable economic and social benefits.

Section Ship and Offshore Structures

The Ship and Offshore Structures (SAOS) group of the Maritime and Transportation Technology (MTT) Department is a key global player in research and education in the field of ship and offshore structures. Our mission is to educate engineers and scientists, and to answer questions emerging from our curiosity and from structural design and operation of ship and offshore structures by carrying out fundamental and applied research. Present formation of the scientific staff is: a full professor, an associate professor, two assistant professors, a researcher, a post-doc and 14 PhD candidates.

Our research and education focus on structural integrity and longevity, addressing: (i) loading & structural response, including fluid-structure interactions and non-destructive evaluation; and (ii) limit states of materials, joints and structures, including (multiaxial) fatigue, fracture, and ultimate strength. Section members play a vital role for the International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress (ISSC). We operate unique testing systems including a hexapod, capable of exerting 6-degree of freedom loads up to 1 MN at frequencies up to 30 Hz. The section members teach 5 courses (20 ECTS) in the BSc Marine Technology curriculum, and 5 courses (25 ECTS) in the MSc Marine Technology and MSc Offshore & Dredging Engineering curricula. On average, 15 master students graduate annually in our section.

Functie omschrijving

As one of three Assistant Professors in the section, you are expected to cover research and education in the field of vibration and noise of ship and offshore structures. The core of this research will focus on material configurations that satisfy structural requirements and help to withstand and reduce noise and vibrations. This includes enabling the production and joining practices needed for implementation into practice. Among other goals, your research will help to reduce the noise transmitted to the marine environment from human activity. You will seek external research sponsorship through national and international sources, including (but not limited to) industry, NWA (Dutch National Scientific Agenda), European Union funding, and/or NWO (Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research). Collaborative initiation and execution of research projects is expected on the university, national, and international levels. We expect that your research will have a positive impact on both societal concerns and industrial practice. Toward that end, you will work toward wide dissemination of your results, through publications in esteemed journals, open science, and FAIR data principles. Commercialization of your research through patents and startups is also encouraged. You will teach at the bachelors and masters level, and your main courses will be a third-year bachelor’s course entitled Complex Loads and Vibrations plus one other. You will be expected to lead PhD research, masters research, and bachelor’s projects in relevant fields. We are curious about your research and teaching statements.

Functie eisen

You should be a scientist or R&D-oriented engineer holding a PhD degree in a field relevant to vibrations, noise, and complex loading of ship and offshore structures. In order of preference, we seek candidates who are strong in analytical modelling, experimental validation, and numerical simulation. Engineering experience and knowledge of production aspects are desired. We require proof of your excellent contribution and collaboration in research programs. Evidence of teaching excellence and a passion for teaching are highly desired. You should be motivated to gain the respect of students and peers based on your excellent teaching. As part of our commitment to diversity, women are especially encouraged to apply.
