Faculty Applied Sciences

The Department of Radiation Science & Technology (rst.tudelft.nl) is one of the six Departments of the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the TU Delft and focuses on research and education in materials, energy and health with radiation as the common denominator. Fields of interest are sustainable nuclear energy, medical radioisotopes, materials for energy storage and conversion, medical technology for diagnosis and therapy, and advanced instrumentation.

Within the Storage of Electrochemical Energy section fundamental research towards a wide scope of chemistries takes place including Li and Na based anodes and cathodes, solid state electrolytes, Na and Zn aqueous chemistries and Mg cathodes. The research focusses on understanding of atomic to mesoscopic processes that determine the macroscopic battery performance parameters as well as the development of new materials. Besides the battery lab, fully equipped for lab scale material synthesis up to battery assembly, the facilities include the nuclear facilities of RID (Neutron Diffraction, SANS, Neutron Reflectometry, Neutron Depth Profiling, Neutron Imaging and positron facilities), XRD and solid state NMR and other spectroscopic techniques. In addition the group has expertise on DFT and macroscopic modelling, which is often combined with the experimental work to build comprehensive understanding of fundamental mechanisms in batteries.

The Faculty of Applied Sciences is the largest faculty of TU Delft, with around 550 scientists, a support staff of 250 and 1,800 students. The faculty conducts fundamental, application-oriented research and offers scientific education at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. The faculty is active in the fields of Life and Health Science & Technology, Nanoscience, Chemical Engineering, Radiation Science & Technology, and Applied Physics.

Functie omschrijving

In the fall of 2019 a tenure track Assistant professor position will become available at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, within the Department of Radiation Science & Technology, section Storage of Electrochemical Energy. The central research theme for this position is physics and charge transfer reactions at interfaces in next generation batteries in its broadest sense making use of the neutron/positron/solid state NMR facilities of the institute, and where especially solid state batteries is an area of interest. In addition the candidate will have considerable freedom to take initiatives in defining its own physics in batteries research directions. We are looking for a candidate with a PhD and preferably several years of Post-Doctoral experience on fundamental battery research, where the use of neutron and/or X-ray scattering is considered an advantage. The aim of the position is to utilize the Reactor Institute Delft infrastructure for the proposed research theme, within the open and collaborative atmosphere of the Storage of Electrochemical Energy group.

Functie eisen

We are looking for a principal investigator with a creative and collaborative mentality who appreciates scientific challenges in battery research and who, through their research, management skills, and teaching qualities can inspire co-workers and students alike. Successful candidates are expected to establish a strong, externally funded research program and to be committed to excellence in teaching at undergraduate (Dutch or English) as well as graduate level (English). Candidates are expected to be competitive in attracting personal (amongst others ERC funded) grants. Applicants should hold a PhD with several years of additional experience in a postdoctoral position. Dutch language skills are not required. We especially welcome applications from female scientists.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

At the start of the tenure-track you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years. Section leader, department leaders and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, you will be appointed in a permanent Assistant Professor position.

TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount for health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.
