The faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences (tudelft.nl/ceg) is committed to outstanding international research and education in the field of civil engineering, applied earth sciences, traffic and transport, water technology and delta technology. The research covers global social issues and is closely connected to education as well as the work of a wide range of knowledge institutions. CEG is convinced that Open Science helps to realise these goals and supports its scientists in integrating Open Science in their research practice. The Faculty of CEG comprises 28 research groups in the following seven departments: Materials Mechanics Management & Design, Engineering Structures, Geoscience and Engineering, Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Transport & Planning, Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management.

The position is located within the department Mechanics, Management & Design (www.tudelft.nl/ceg/3md). 3MD focuses on the design, mechanics, materials and management of civil infrastructures and buildings. A multi-scale research approach is followed, starting at micro-scale (materials), to meso-scale (structures) and to macro-scale (infrastructures/systems). The department governs the entire life cycle from develop, design, build, maintain, operate to demolish or reuse. The department has strong competences in modelling and design for both civil infrastructures as well as buildings.

Novel, advanced civil engineering materials offer solutions to current societal challenges regarding safety, durability and sustainability. The group Applied Mechanics focuses on the computational analysis of multiscale failure processes in materials and structures. The analysis of failure processes involves many length scales and co-existing mechanical, chemical and physical processes. It is a great challenge to bridge the length scales through multiscale computational modelling and to couple the different processes through multi-physics computational modelling, which are core elements of this research programme. For this purpose, accurate, robust and well-founded models are developed for temporal and spatial discretisation, and algorithms are constructed for the efficient, accurate and robust solution of the ensuing non-linear algebraic equations. In recent research, there is a focus on the computational design of novel civil engineering materials such as polymers, ceramics, randomly fibre-reinforced materials and composite laminates through virtual materials testing. Furthermore, advanced nonlinear multiscale modelling techniques, and extreme computational mechanics problems (e.g. long-term variable amplitude fatigue loading, impact and blast loading) are investigated.

Functie omschrijving

Within the civil engineering domain, nano-technology is creating new possibilities with respect to development of new construction materials and structures. Goal of these materials is to reduce use of raw materials or use of bio-materials, and to meet increasing societal demands with respect to form and function, while leading to safe and sustainable structures. To contribute to these developments, new numerical multi-scale modelling research techniques have to be developed. You wil focus on (i) modelling and simulation of nanostructure of construction materials, (ii) molecular dynamics and mechanics simulations approached, (iii) contribute to multiscale model development for construction materials, (iv) nanotechnology and nanomaterials for energy efficient construction, (v) nano-assembly and "bottom-up" design of constrction materials, (vi) nanomodification of construction materials, including functional films and coatings, and (vii) nano-bio-mechanics.

Close cooperation with partners in knowledge institutions and industry is important. The tenure track includes publishing in peer reviewed journal papers, acquiring funding for research (industry, EU and NWO).

Teaching and supervising researchers and students will be part of your duties. You are expected to actively contribute to the education portfolio of the section, department and faculty at all academic levels (BSc, MSc and PhD). Together with colleagues you will develop new approaches to engineering education using the state of the art facilities present at TU Delft.

Functie eisen

We seek a colleague who has the ambition and dedication to pursue a career in academia, both in research and education. You have an outstanding scientific track record and are able to build and give a firm scientific boost to our knowledge and understanding of nano-technology in relation to new construction materials and structures. You can, through your research, management skills and teaching qualities, inspire co-workers and students alike. Our future colleague is expected to establish a strong, externally funded research programme and is committed to excel in teaching at undergraduate (Dutch or English) as well as graduate level (English).

Additionally;

  • You hold a master degree in civil engineering or materials science;

  • You have experience in numerical multi-scale modelling of civil engineering materials;

  • You should be able to work in a team, like to work in a cooperative and amicable environment and possess good organisational and communication skills.

  • You must be proficient in spoken and written English. International applicants are encouraged to acquire knowledge of Dutch.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

At the start of the tenure-track you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years. Section leader, department leader and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive a start-up package and formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, you will be appointed in a permanent Assistant Professor position.

TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount for health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged and parttime employment is possible. An International Children’s Centre offers childcare and an international primary school. Dual Career Services offers support to accompanying partners. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.

TU Delft sets specific standards for the English competency of the teaching staff. TU Delft offers training to improve English competency.

Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. If you do not yet have your teaching certificate, we allow you up to three years to obtain this.
