About the job

Google's projects, like our users, span the globe and require managers to keep the big picture in focus while being able to dive into the unique engineering challenges we face daily. As a Technical Program Manager at Google, you lead complex, multi-disciplinary engineering projects using your engineering expertise. You plan requirements with internal customers and usher projects through the entire project lifecycle. This includes managing project schedules, identifying risks and clearly communicating them to project stakeholders. You're equally at home explaining your team's analyses and recommendations to executives as you are discussing the technical trade-offs in product development with engineers.

Using your extensive technical and leadership expertise, you manage projects of various size and scope, identifying future opportunities, improving processes and driving the technical directions of your programs.

As a Technical Program Manager, you will work cross-functionally within the organization to ensure the delivery of ultra long-haul fiber optic infrastructure systems to support the core IP traffic demands which globally interconnect data center, backbone and peering facilities to serve Google users.

You will manage multiple projects with high degree of complexity and scope. You will work closely with Technical and Program/Product/Project Leadership to determine project priorities and resolve scheduling issues and will have the ability to demonstrate independence, creativity and initiative that permits your work to be accepted and trusted by upper management and cross-functional teams globally.

Behind everything our users see online is the architecture built by the Technical Infrastructure team to keep it running. From developing and maintaining our data centers to building the next generation of Google platforms, we make Google's product portfolio possible. We're proud to be our engineers' engineers and love voiding warranties by taking things apart so we can rebuild them. We keep our networks up and running, ensuring our users have the best and fastest experience possible.

Responsibilities

  • Project manage the delivery of large-scale network projects composed of long-haul dark fiber, leased wavelengths, circuit adds/moves/changes/disconnects, colo space, power, cross-connects, inside plant fiber, amplifier/regen sites from inception through delivery.
  • Lead cross-functional teams and manage multiple, simultaneous large scale network projects with competing priorities. Lead kickoff and regular project status meetings and keep downstream teams at Google apprised of project and delivery status.
  • Manage project scope changes, through impact assessment and communication across stakeholders.
  • Engage with external vendors for outsourced network build services. Facilitate review and acceptance of vendor handover documentation.
  • Assist upstream planning, design and acquisition teams in developing infrastructure requirements, priorities and delivery date expectations. Engage with engineering staff to determine root causes and solutions and present your team's analyses, recommendations and approaches to stakeholders and executive management.

At lunchtime, almost everyone eats in the office café, sitting at whatever table has an opening and enjoying conversations with Googlers from different teams. Our commitment to innovation depends on everyone being comfortable sharing ideas and opinions. Every employee is a hands-on contributor, and everyone wears several hats. Because we believe that each Googler is an equally important part of our success, no one hesitates to pose questions directly to anyone, at any level, in the company.
